San Francisco, Chinese New Year.
The streets are PACKED with people celebrating. A robotaxi muscles its way through, carrying no passenger.

So it's an empty robot car, taking up the space of a dozen people standing, barging through the crowd which is crowded.

And police are scratching their heads about how the car ended up torched.

@CelloMomOnCars @robotistry the car takes up more space than the people who might fit inside it, so in what way does it help reduce the crowd by attempting to occupy the same space as it?

chthonicionic,
@chthonicionic@mastodon.online avatar

@robotistry @CelloMomOnCars absolutely, so shoving your way into that crowd isn’t a good idea

Now we get to wave the magic mass transit wand as well :)

(I live next to a 60,000 seat stadium whose nearest mass transit station has to close on match days because it can’t cope, so no bragging here)

Stuck on a tube platform. Which reminds me of the Chinese sound engineer I shared a lab with years ago. He had scale model of a tube station in the basement wired up with speakers and mics because the standard sound equations didn’t work for long spaces - they assumed a roughly square room. Through scale experiments, he worked out the equations for long spaces. And that is why announcements on tube platforms are now understandable instead of being an echoey mess.

Been meaning to say, if anyone has a pet that they are desperate to see in a Santa hat but either 1. thinks it would be an indignity to make them wear one or 2. would like to avoid their pet taking appropriate revenge for the indignity, do share a photo with me & I'll happily do a virtual version if I can!

I realise in the days of AI and photo filters you don't need a photoshopper anymore, but just in case anyone wants an artisnal version 🎅 🐱 🐶

@eclectech btw - the white background was actually because she was so black I had to up the exposure that much to get any detail and it totally burnt out the background.

@chthonicionic@mastodon.online avatar

@eclectech yeah. I caught myself a couple of times thinking “I could go look over lunch” and just realised I didn’t really need to hate that man any more as that was giving more attention than he deserves

Went to a memorial service at which an IFAB committee member spoke and mentioned Lawrence Fox to applause and I’ve never felt more out of place.

Thermal Imaging Our Home

As I blogged about a few weeks ago, I've been playing with the Seek Thermal Compact Infrared Camera. I've been using it for such incredibly interesting things as seeing how cold my nose is and whether my radiators are balanced. Fun!

But what I really wanted it for is to see how well - or poorly - insulated our new house is. So I waited until it was freezing outside, then

@Edent a condensing drier would get rid of that vent (I have one because it’s nowhere near an outside wall) but then you either have to wait for the water collected to cool or you are dumping the heat in the form of hot water.
