Ok peeps... what do you think the battery life will be on this bad boy?

codemonkeymike, to linux

users, what do you think is the most intimidating or confusing part of someone first getting into Linux?

Where do you see people get stuck or dissuaded?

It's surprisingly difficult to find options for laptops shipping or any other supported non-ChromeOS flavor of from the website.

codemonkeymike,

@vwbusguy so it has to be custom ordered

codemonkeymike,

@vwbusguy @thefossguy I'm just happy that hardware will be compatible

There's been so many Windows enshitification moments where people say this is our best opportunity for helping more people get their freedom trough .

Now we have maybe the best of these moments yet – W11 demanding new PCs, W10 being killed off, and this whole Recall shit.

Yet, after all this, I've never seen any really newbie friendly website explaining why and how to try Linux – with simple text and elegant design.

It seems to me the designers would be perfect for making this.

codemonkeymike,

@forteller this is absolutely a passion of mine. What do you think needs to be outlined, explained and taught to newcomers?

I basically pay ChatGPT to ensure I'll never have to learn regex.

So far it's working!

My brother was recently in Japan and picked me up the quirkiest little computer from a shop! I love it so much. I have never seen a circular track pad!

I’ve been having a great time with my new @frameworkcomputer laptop. The flexibility is really unique. First I got to build the laptop myself with parts, and now I get it to be what I want it to be with regards to input and ports and such. I’ll probably swap out the screen bezel for a bolder color, though. The purple is not very purple. Worth the 6 month wait!

Framework laptop with keyboard aligned left and rgb macro pad on the right.

codemonkeymike,

@gabek @frameworkcomputer so fun. How's the keyboard?

Cardamom is an under appreciated spice.

If you're at today, come check out my NixOS talk at DMC 118!

Should be up on YouTube as well!

codemonkeymike, to random

It's the mid 90s and you're at the sitting at the family computer in the living room...

What are you doing?

codemonkeymike, to NixOS

Really getting excited for my talk at

I'm having WAY too much fun putting this slide deck together.

I hate to say it, but i'm really not impressed with this Thinkpad X1 Extreme.

Brand new, i have the nvidia GPU disabled, not using bluetooth, not using speakers, just doing light coding, nothing CPU intensive..

And i've been at this coffee shop for 2 hours, and getting this :(

codemonkeymike,

@RL_Dane well that's the wild part. I have my TLP setting scaling the CPU way down. I'm removing TLP and trying it regular power save mode and we'll see

On a scale of 1 to Drupal, how janky is it to create a index on a text field like this?

Using a prefix index, as all I care about is the first 10 characters of the field for lookup purposes

codemonkeymike, to random

So that's why this laptop was sitting funny and the keyboard was bulging.

Question. How do you properly dispose of these puffy batteries

codemonkeymike, to random

My dad just sent me this old pic of teenage me rocking that old ass Pentium 1 probably.

That keyboard didn't play, though.

codemonkeymike, to rust

I can't even turn on my kindle without you crab people in my face. lol

Hey peeps. Question for you. I'm giving a talk at at the end of the month and want to get one of those wireless "next slide" buttons so I can move around while I talk.

Any recommendations? I've never purchased or used one
