Made plans to go to a current popular movie in a few days, my first since the pandemic times, and I'm sad and angry because being masked and not eating snacks in the theater reminds me of the safety we do not have, and seeing what my sweetie wants to see reminds me of how I haven't had the energy or health to go see the niche film I really did want to see in a theater with friends earlier this year.

I feel fortunate overall, but there is so much to grieve and be angry about.

I'm surprised at how little press there is about what's going on with Eastern Gateway Community College in Ohio. They're changing leadership and it's my understanding that there are questions about whether the college will be able to operate this fall given ongoing investigation of their practices. This is the only recent article about it that I know of, and the rest of my impressions are because I have family there.

Unhappy with the harm and disruption self-driving cars are causing in San Francisco and other places? You can disable one by gently placing a traffic cone on the hood. Here is a video with examples. 3.5 years of constant caution and sacrifice, withholding dinners at restaurants & concerts, and I let one professional event encourage me to take needless risks. I spoke in a room with 80 people without a mask. I asked the event planner to have air filters in the room, but she said "their effectiveness for Covid prevention is limited," which is, of course, BS, and that should've been when I withdrew from the event. I let my guard down, and now I have my first #COVID infection. Be safe out there!

I slowed down reading Witch King because I did not want it to end and wasn't sure where it would land. Didn't want to leave the brilliant genderfluid mess and his angry lesbian mom bestie and her hot wife's fucked up but endearing little brother behind. I kept finding stuff I could already tell would be cool in new ways on the second reading. I love that.

It's kinda shitty but I'm actually proud of the simulation procedure I hacked together here. Starts from OLS on 14(!!) annual observations -> bootstrap draws -> run through tight theory model to estimate conditional distribution of times till Kessler Syndrome

I have a scientist acquaintance who has been attempting to publish philosophical mathematical stuff about a different kind of unification of theory for mathematics and physics. I both don't comprehend it well enough to critique thoroughly, and can hear the tone of eccentricity and obsessiveness that give me pause.

I'm reading The Three-Body Problem and I caught myself wondering if he's been targeted by a sophon.

The work is theoretical, mind you. But his spouse is an LHC physicist....
