Just read in bboard that #WordPerfect 8 is available on #MetaArray at #SDF. Type wp to run it.
You can find a quick start guide here: https://mendelson.org/wpdos/wp8c.pdf

I will say that I was never a big Word Perfect user, so none of the muscle memory came back.

A key thing is in upper right: ESC-= to get to menus.

Amateur hour here today. Realized I hadn't put the python code for my widget that sends a report to client on the other machine I plan to migrate. Opened script and found it would not run. Looked at logs and found it hasn't run in two weeks. Error message indicates SQL server permission problem. Logged into server manually with those credentials and it's fine. I realized I changed some stored procedures and maybe that user has permissions messed up. Nope, sp run fine. 1/2

@cs@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Decide it's not a permissions problem, since the user seems to be able to do everything. Revert to old code from when it was running. Still same issue. Try hard-coding the credentials in the script. Still won't run. These are same credentials I can log into the server with and run the sp. Won't work with python. Think maybe problem with dependencies (not that many--mainly sqlalchemy), so re-download all of those. Nope.
What was the problem? DNS entries got changed on me. 2/2

Had to use full name instead of just the machine name as I was earlier. :-/

@cenbe I had been referring to machines as foo.local but now have to use foo.mydomain.local apparently since May 21 when the IT contractor merged another group of machines into our network.

We kinda talked about this when he was doing it, but I didn't think too hard about things that might break, and that makes me wonder if there are other things that might break (ODBC connections, etc), but no one in the office is screaming, so may just be my stuff that broke. 😄

Can someone tell me why #Prosper #Police need this armored vehicle? $689,000 #PoliceMilitarization

They always answer something like “We got it with a grant, so the city didn’t pay anything,” as if that money just comes from nowhere. “high water rescue” is the other answer, of course.

Just found out our postage machine is apparently being decertified as of 6/30/24, and I don't think I've seen a single bit of communication on this from until I happened to be browsing their payment portal and see it. 😮

The #GOP and Dems haven’t always aligned the way they are now. Also, some have affinity with the #libertarian message of the GOP, that is now under increasing strain

@mrcool We used to do it for fun, just to hear it. There were also people around who had telephone accounts that would save like $2/month by not having touch tone. Touch tone still worked on their phone service, but if the telephone company caught you using it more than a few times a month they'd charge you the fee! 😆 Any way to make a buck. As if the touch tone was costing the phone company money to support. 🙄

cs,
@cs@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mrcool We had touch tone very early on, and it was widespread, but the local phone companies charged to use it. Even after touch tone was pretty much ubiquitous in the 1980s, you would often find the fee on our bill (very small) and if you were pinching pennies, you could tell the to take it off and use pulse. Eventually, they dropped the fee, probably in the early 90s.

Me (silently): No, their last names come last. Their surnames come first.

Narrow win for file transmission protocols.

I kinda expected a few write-in candidates.

I should point out that I had a licensed copy of #Zmodem from #OmenTechnologies on 5.25 floppy that floated around for years. I think I eventually gave it to someone on #SDF

Recognizing that while kermit also was a protocol, it did a lot of other things as well.
