At this stage of year 5 of the COVID pandemic, I’m choosing to just lol @ people’s cognitive dissonance showing in realtime.

As the effects of repeated infection of an immune damaging virus become less easy to hide, I’ll be taking this position

Fuck anyone who thinks rocking up to work alongside others when they have COVID is ok (including Lady Gaga).

Also, the idea that she gave support staff the choice with full disclosure? Laughable given the power dynamic and what would likely happen to someone who said no.

COVID booster done just now.

Pharmacist ran through the details beforehand. I asked “when will the 5G on my phone get better reception?” 😅

Random thought. LLMs, and prompt based interactions, offer a window into their computing power.

How could individuals use them, for running other things outside of their intended use?

I’m thinking:

  • Steganography, encoding information via the output of LLMs to specific prompts
  • Batch processing calculations
  • Multi LLM approaches to these

Watching the Kotlin Multiplatform ‘24 keynote.

It’s a breath of fresh air after years of Apple’s super-highly-polished WWDC ones.

Specifically: people falter naturally like real humans giving talks, multiple companies involved showing some industry collaboration. Something that’s just not present at WWDC re: Swift.

Interesting to note a few more folks masked up in the supermarket today than in recent weeks. When you’re usually the only one, it’s easy to pick up on.

Also: NZ is currently in another wave. Maybe consider reducing your odds of being part of spreading it folks 😷

To whoever it was uploaded a sample of Darude - Sandstorm with subtitles… I salute you 🫡

A friend asked me if I was voting by post in the UK election. Nearly 7 years in to living in NZ, and it kinda feels wrong. It’s where I’m from, but it’ll never be ‘home’ again.

Eyes rolling in the back of my head seeing RNZ use the editorial phrase “since COVID”, as if we’ve not also had things reported like school closures and bus cancellations haven’t happened in the last week here, due to COVID.

Which one is it ? 🤔

Slacks move on privacy with training AI models on folk’s messages is going to end up with too many people having to use Teams. I really don’t want to have to use Teams.

@fastmail what’s your policy on AI tools, and is there an AI roadmap at Fastmail planned?

Asking as I don’t want to have my email tied up with any AI/LLM based software.

Researching things... Looks like only the Pixel 8 Android phones have HDMI output on them, out of that range.

I don't want to buy one yet, but I can envision getting one for cross-platform dev later this year and HDMI output combined with the ability to install Grapheneos or some other more degoogled OS will be what I'm after.

It appears we’re in the breathless adulation of GPT in the Apple tech press, and big PR pushes too.

So many folks are going to lean into it all believing they’ll make good $$.

Some will. Many won’t. Same as every other bubble and hype cycle.

Asahi Linux (Fedora 40) installed on my M1 Air.

So far so good, although really I’m just enjoying having a look around and seeing what modern Linux is like. Hats off to the Asahi team and everyone involved, it’s a neat and considerate install

I’ve reached an internal decision on all of my side project dev and tech stack stuff:

  • Gonna stick Asahi Linux on my M1 air so I can fart around with something speedier in that environment.

  • Going to keep on with my iOS apps, and get ProVJ out after GoVJ 3 is released.

  • Next project beyond that will be trying to get a version of Go/ProVJ on Windows/Linux and potentially Android tablets

I setup a runner for my Forgejo instance on our home server (an intel 2018 Mac mini).

My unit tests for my video pipeline check the output of the pipeline, against a previous output. Images snapshotted to png.

All the tests fail on the home server. They pass on my M2 Studio. The output images appear the same, no major fail in the pipeline.

My suspicion is this is a png encoding difference in the simulator between intel and apple silicon 🧐

A tip for anyone getting social media fatigue but wanting to stay connected:

You can add people’s public mastodon feeds as RSS feeds to an RSS reader (like, say Net News Wire on iOS/iPad/Mac)

Just put “.rss” on the end of their user profile. e.g this is mine:

https://social.lightbeamapps.com/@dave.rss
