Geek, husband, lover, software developer, Londoner. Not necessarily in that order.

he/him

Proud #GTK and #GNOME dev; member of the GNOME Foundation.

You may remember me for my work at OpenedHand, Intel, Endless, and the GNOME Foundation. Otherwise, you heard about me being a scary person on the Internet.

Opinions are always my own, but if you don't like them that's too bad.

The astroturfing of the fash was absurdly blatant: people with MAGA and Trump hats, a lot of them recording themselves into a phone; bunch of terfs shouting “something something biology”; lots of gammons pretty close to a heart attack or a liver failure by the looks of them

It's almost life affirming knowing that, over 10 years after the fact, you're still living rent-free in the head of someone who hates everything you gave them, for free

Well. Thread where I propose moving Change Proposal discussion (and eventually more) is hitting all of the points of self-parody. Just waiting to literally be compared to Hitler at this point....

@mattdm I have to say I admire the guy trying to bring OpenPGP and email back, and use it as a selling point for mailing lists.

Also: thanks for doing this. As a reader-only of the fedora lists via hyperkitty I think moving to Discourse would be a massive improvement.

Flights booked for Riga, so I guess I'm going to be at GUADEC, this July

Still undecided whether I'm also going to be presenting a talk; I guess we'll have to wait until the schedule gets published…

@bittin the GUADEC website lists two preferred accommodations: https://events.gnome.org/event/101/page/170-accommodation-options

@gnome There's this great issue of extensions breaking after every major gnome release. Do you have anything in plan to fix this?

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@super_user_do @gnome I recommend reading the extensions guide on the matter: https://gjs.guide/extensions/overview/updates-and-breakage.html#why-extensions-break

This should explain everything you need to know.

UPDATE: GNOME has now been verified thanks to the action of @ebassi 🥳

Well done! 👏

Does anyone know any way to verify that the account at https://floss.social/@gnome is official?

I suggested to them they might verify their web link, but as far as I can tell the haven't? Also emailed GNOME via their official website to check if this is their account, but didn't receive a response.

Any ideas? Anyone know someone at GNOME who could verify?

I'm not suggesting it's fake by the way, it's just frustrating not to be able to verify! :)

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@FediThing It's the official account, yes; it should have been verified, though. I'll ping the admins

Why is https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3438/jiggle/ not core gnome-shell functionality

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@mjg59 Likely because we're still using the "press Left Control to locate the pointer" option in the accessibility settings; the wobble would be a nice addition, though, and it would probably be easier to implement in the shell. Make sure to open an issue!

How big is an typical regular Linux install these days. Like just the OS. Not /home and maybe not even the snaps or pops or whatever. How many gigabytes.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Around 5-6 GB for a full desktop installation

Are there any good, general-purpose for Linux that have a congruent look with ? On KDE, Kate is perfect, but it is a bit jarring to use on a Gnome desktop.

VsCode or something heavily themeable would be fine, although of course VsCode is Microsoft, which is something I want to try and avoid.

I'm currently basically just using vim, which is awesome but sometimes you just want something with a full graphical interface.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@saluki @nekohayo It's definitely optimised for building GNOME applications, but you can use it for general IDE reasons.

How to ensure I'm never going to contribute to your project and I'll endeavour with all my strength to rip it out of every project I maintain, in one easy step:

"Please first see the manual on how to report bugs. The proper address for bug reports is mailing-list at project.org"

ebassi, (edited )
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@TheEvilSkeleton Or, worse: Discord.

To be fair, though, at least I can search Bugzilla for bugs; looking over the past three years of emails in a barely indexed mailman archive is just a waste of everybody's time.

#Amberol 0.10.0 is out! After a tragic mess with a #GNOME run time update, and with lots of fixes accumulating over a development branch, I decided to spin up a release. Highlights:

  • tweaked UI, to avoid confusing the waveform control and the volume control
  • improved scaling of textures using #GTK 4.10
  • ability to restore the last playlist at startup
  • optional background playback

Plus the usual lots and lots of small fixes, tweaks, and performance improvements.

Amberol's compact/mobile mode, showing just the main UI.
The newly added "Restore Playlist" option, which appears only when you launch Amberol and there's a playlist from the previous session available.
The drop UI for Amberol, with a new blurred background to increase legibility.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

It's been a year and a couple of weeks since I released Amberol 0.1.0 on Flathub, and it's been downloaded 100k times, which is absolutely unfathomable to me, considering that I started the project to figure out how GTK and Rust worked together, and had no pretence of making an application that would be useful for anybody but me.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@dvogel it’s just the window resized to its minimum size; thanks to libadwaita, the UI is responsive, and the playlist becomes an overlay

My last was in 2018, so let's update it:

  • I'm a free and open source software developer, mainly contributing to the ecosystem and software development platform
  • I am, through no fault of my own, the maintainer of the GNOME developer documentation website
  • I write the occasional app, like Amberol
  • I stream my work on Twitch: https://twitch.tv/ebassi
  • I still plan on finishing the History of GNOME podcast
  • I build plastic models
  • trans rights are human rights

A picture of my cat, Rey, looking incredibly cute on the bed
A photo of the Gundam RX-78-2 shield, painted and with battle damage, sitting on the build instructions for the model
The landing card for the GNOME developer documentation website, showing a pencil, a pair of glasses, documents, and a cup of espresso over an abstract shape, with the words "Developer Docs" underneath it.
