@vga256 That is…certainly something. Looks like a couple of different computers stitched together. Perhaps the screen bezel of a MBA, the top case to an early MacBook or possibly iBook, and the innards of a PC laptop.

Interesting. I bought a certain CD-ROM at Goodwill.

macOS only shows the HFS partition, on an Apple Partition Map; there's no ISO 9660 partition. There are Mac applications on that HFS volume.

But when I boot the Windows VM and connect the DVD drive to it, it sees a “CDFS” partition, with Windows .exe files but nothing for the Mac.

edenwaith,
@edenwaith@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@boredzo A place I worked many years ago mastered CDs so Windows saw certain files and the Mac saw others. I think we used Toast Titanium for that process.

Trying to load up a MIDI file in Lua and play it on the Playdate, but I kept getting crashes. After taking a break, I finally realized the error — I was using the dot notation instead of the colon notation for a sequence instance. The foibles of being new to Lua (and the compiler not warning me otherwise of my mistake).

While playing around with some mid-80s Sierra like graphics, possibly the greatest limitation of those graphics wasn't number of available colors, but the double-width pixels (hence why the resolution was 160x200, but stretched out to 320x200). But Sierra's artists did quite an amazing job with the technology of the era.

edenwaith,

@MichaelKlamerus interesting, I once lived three hours south of the Canadian border and remember getting a TV channel out of Alberta (possibly a cable channel, but still interesting to consider).

I've noticed an issue that older versions of iOS Simulators won't work with the Mac's clipboard, which makes it a pain if one is trying to paste a lengthy e-mail address into a text field in the iOS Simulator. The most "recent" version of the iOS Simulator will work with the clipboard, just anything older doesn't for some odd reason. So I wrote a small AppleScript to work around this issue for older simulators:

edenwaith,

@mac84tv I archived ~200 floppy disks several years ago. The most cumbersome process was backing up some 800K Mac disks which I had to use my Mac SE to read, then use a Floppy Emu to get those files off the computer and onto more modern systems. An interesting process for it all.

Happy new year! Even with the holidays and everything lately, a lot of great stuff came out this week. If you recently released something that you want included, always feel free to send me an email or message me on social media (see About page) to let me know it’s out.

The most recent DOS Games Jam just concluded and a lot of great games have been made for it. I enjoy doing these since they’re so casual and there’s no ranking involved. I was especially excited to see that a holiday version of Stair Quest was made.

Hexany’s Roguelike Tiles is a really nice looking batch of tiles released under a Creative Commons license for anyone to use. I just thought they looked nice and thought it should be included.

Spheroid is a puzzle game for the Commodore Amiga where you move a metal sphere around a maze and get to the exit. The Amiga was my first computer so it makes me happy that Itch has an active Amiga game dev scene on there.

a glowing yellow pepper outside in a park?Dead Drop
Dead Drop is the 19th game in the Carol Reed series, a series of first person point-and-click mystery games. I haven’t played any of these (I will fix that this year!) but I heard they’re solid games. I just enjoy that the games are exclusively available for sale from the developer’s site and nowhere else. It reminds me of the 90s/early 00s era of buying indie games.

Word Thirds
Word Thirds is a new game by John Passfield, of Halloween Harry and Flight of the Amazon Queen fame. It’s a puzzle game on the iOS app store and Itch where you make as many six letter words with letter tiles as you can within sixty seconds. I’m awful at word games but it’s a fun game.

This is a bundle of writing about games that includes three issues of the No Escape magazine as well as some essays. It’s a great way to support one of the best sites out there, No Escape.

BlueSuburbia is now on Steam. I’ve mentioned the game before but previously it was only on Itch. This demo is a first person interactive fiction where you explore poems through immersive environments. I believe it was built in the Unreal Engine but it does some really cool stuff like having playable Bitsy games inside the game.

Trying to figure out how to create the A glyph with a circle around it for the . It seems like this should be relatively easy or far more difficult than it should be. Fortunately, it is the latter. The answer is in the "Designing for Playdate" docs: https://sdk.play.date/2.1.1/Designing%20for%20Playdate.html#_buttons

Answer: Just use the glyphs Ⓐ or Ⓑ and just draw them like standard text. An easy solution, it was the digging around for the answer which was trickier.

New processor installed! Upgraded from an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 5 5600X. After I first put in the new CPU, I turned on the computer, the heat sink’s fan spun up, and….nothing. Nada on the screen. Then the computer restarted itself. I reset the CMOS by removing the motherboard’s battery (conveniently hiding underneath the graphics card), then reseated the new processor again. Success! Probably the toughest part was trying to get the heat sink screwed back on.

In preparing to install a new CPU into a PC, I’ve finally tackled something new by upgrading the BIOS. In this particular case, the BIOS version was likely original, so I ended up having to make 4 upgrades to get the BIOS to the intended version for the new processor.

I haven’t seen this mentioned in many places: the @playdate Mirror app has been updated, including support for Apple Silicon. Hoping this solves the freezing issues I had last time I streamed with it. (It only happened on my M1 Mac, no issues on Intel.) https://play.date/mirror/changelog/

I'm surprised if Mirror didn't already have Apple Silicon support already (technical issues?), but I don't recall encountering any issues with it on my MBP. Let us know if this seems to fix any issues you've had when running this while streaming.
