Yeah, of course you can use Brave as a browser alternative. Then you just support a transphobic far-right cryptobro :starringcat:

@revengeday yeah I took one look at that project and was like noooooooooooooope. Though from the sound of it it's even worse than I realized oof.

If you enjoy my comments under your posts but aren't following me for some reason ... You should fix that. With a tiny handful of exceptions I'm here to make connections and have two-way conversations, not follow "influencers" or whatever. It's mutuals or nothing for me, for the most part. I go thru and unfollow my non mutuals every few weeks.

@etherdiver This manage-it-yourself design is a lot of what drew me to Mastodon in the first place.

The lifeblood of any musician is people hearing their music. Nothing else we do (as musicians) matters compared to that. The kindest, coolest, most considerate thing you can do for any musician is listen to their . 5 minutes (or 40, if you have it to spare) isn't much to you but it can make a musician's day... In short, if you want to support musicians, listen to their music.

them, buy stuff, tell your friends, sure... But first !

And, hey...

@etherdiver I don't quite agree.

Writing / playing music is the most important thing for musicians. That's why we got into it in the first place. And I would argue that chasing play statistics runs the risk of ruining the thing you love.

Nonetheless, I wish you luck in your promotion endeavors.

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver yeah that's fair. I have this too. And I haven't exactly figured out the promotion stuff.

Wanted to throw that out there because I've seen people burn out when the reaction doesn't live up to their expectations.

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver That's a good way to look at it!

Been struggling with writing music and I wonder if I've maybe made a discovery...

I love metal. I listen to a ton of metal. I want to make the songs I'm working on metal.

When writing... through the process the songs become progressively more moody and haunting and less actually metal.

I'm finding that as much as I can do it... it feels inauthentic. It feels far off from my creative center. I rarely like the straight metal tracks I make. I almost feel like the heavy distortion and pounding drums need to be more of an accent than the main feature of my stuff.

Is this just me discovering "my style" or a case of struggling to get out of my comfort zone?

It's not like I haven't been trying for years to do styles out of my comfort zone.

So, now I'm asking... Should I drop the dream (at least for now) of putting together a straightforward metal project and just do what comes naturally?

It's this weird thing where I'm examining what I want to do vs what I think I'd actually be good at.

It's so weird... I don't want to make those songs... But I like them more than the songs I want to make.

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@Gwendolyn I know what you mean. For me it's a struggle between whether I want my music to be experimental / challenging or just fun. So I try to do both, which can be a tricky line to walk.

The thing to remember is that your style is not set in stone. You can record a moody album now and a heavy one later. It's more interesting when an artist's style evolves anyway.

Nothing less interesting or useful than telling others what to post/not post. You do know you have perfect control over who you follow? That you can mute people, terms, and hashtags? That you have a block button?

I'll never tell you what to put on your feed. I might give you warning about the fact that what you're posting is about to make me mute/unfollow/block you... depending on how much I like you/how much of an existing relationship we have.

Top topic at bluesky today seems to be how much Mastodon sucks 😂

Meanwhile, at Mastodon, how much bluesky sucks is barely cracking the top 20 😂

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver Exactly. There are plenty of people here, and posts get a lot of engagement. I still hear people wondering if Masto will reach critical mass, but like... it already has critical mass. It's thriving.

ektotherm,

@I_Divorced_Life Joined a little over a month ago. It's great! People are friendly and generally willing to engage in thoughtful discussion.

Also I've found a lot of cool weird new music. Love a good weird tune.

I need a new stick bag and I can't pick, so I'm asking Mastodon for your opinion.

I've got three finalists, you let me know which one I should get!

@yougenius I agree that the Meinl looks the best

reallychris, to random

if like me, you're smugly pasting the john mastodon links on twitter, you should also post the john calckey link, because imo it has a better chance of retaining some users, and whichever john they pick, we can still all be friends https://calckey.org/join/

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@reallychris Interesting, hadn't heard of Calkey. Do you think it has a more gentle learning curve than Mastodon?

No, you just don't know where to look.

Also, you're forgetting all the unadulterated garbage that was also released during the <time period>.

After much consideration and soul searching I think I'm leaving reddit. When I go I'm going to try to delete all my content, too -- close to 10 years worth of posts and comments. I'm also a mod of a couple subs, one mid sized (300k subscribers) and one small (not sure but under 10k I think).

Given the new focus on monetization there, I'm no longer interested. I will support communities with my labor and creative output, but not corporations (unless they're paying me well, that is).

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver The reddit situation has been such a bummer to watch. I wasn't nearly as involved with it as you were, but I did my share of browsing.

It was always the best place to dive into some new niche. And the best place to find answers to technical questions. It's sad that those communities are going to go to shit or die altogether.

It's been fun to watch other big tech companies trip and fall, but with reddit I think the internet will lose something.

Hats off to you for your commitment.

Look what I built!

This is the MMI Modular Two Nine Five, a recreation of the Buchla 295 filter, for eurorack format.

I'm just a builder, I don't design anything, but I'm learning to read a schematic and track down build issues. In this case I know there are a few touch ups I need to do because the 500 Hz and 3.5kHz channels aren't filtering at the stated frequencies.

The pain point is that some of the touch ups are between two trimmers, so I have to desolder those in order to reach them. Ah well, live and learn!

@synthdiy

The front panel of the 295 with horizontal sliders with red LED lights, a column of jacks on the right. Held in my hand, against a background of my cluttered workbench.

Bass stereo width might be my favorite music production "rule" to break.

Right now I'm working on something with stupidly wide bass and I'm not even sorry.

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver @c_gurra Yeah I was thinking about mono compatibility. I just really like the "my head is swimming in a sea of bass" feeling when listing on headphones. If it doesn't translate, then oh well.

ektotherm,
@ektotherm@musicians.today avatar

@etherdiver I agree. If you're not aiming your music at the radio or at a stadium, then I'd argue it makes sense to take a "headphones first" approach.
