Millie McGinn talking about the song Black Rain: “I originally didn’t like it and didn’t want it on the album but Orlaith convinced me. It sort of reminded me of a bad time – that’s why we put it last, so people wouldn’t hear it.”

@ianRobinson Well, it’s out of context and it should never surprise anyone were I to shout at clouds, but last “so people wouldn’t hear it,” is one of the silliest things I’ve heard.

Not that I’m flourishing or am known for brilliant album sequencing, but my last track is a pull out of a nose dive or a hint at where the next album goes and, if someone has the album on loop, should work as set up for the first track.

I just got an ad on Instagram from Apple that has them shoving a bunch of things we love (music, games, art) and squeezing it with a hydraulic press into an unrecognisable smush that turns into an iPad. Incredible optics, what a metaphor for the crushing effect big tech has on anything fun and creative whenever it gets involved.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@decryption I don’t know, and not that I play them, but I hear people enjoy playing games on their big tech manufactured devices.

And for what I do know, recording music, this is definitely fun with my Apple doo-dads.

I always have very mixed feelings about playing music outloud from a cycle, but if you're going to do it, an old gramophone horn is the stylish way to do it. https://road.cc/content/feature/behold-airnimal-joey-musical-twist-308183

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL Now, I’m no audio engineer, but it seems as though the horn is pointing the wrong way.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL That clears that up.

Now, the next problem is how to make sure everyone in the group is hearing a song they like.

The distinction between protection for sound recordings versus their underlying compositions has always been interesting to me. This article does a nice job of illustrating the issue with sounds and images. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/02/arts/music/song-copyright-sheet-music-ed-sheeran-marvin-gaye.html?unlocked_article_code=1.pU0.KuyJ.slicLgdNHZXn&smid=url-share

But what if the underlying composition is a painting as opposed to sheet music? That is the concept presented in this article about a visual artist who has synesthesia and is using technology to translate his artwork into music. https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-art-painter-synesthesia-composed-music-from-paintings-2024-4

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@thgirwnhoj The people who “taught” the AI “composition” either licensed or infringed the rights of the recordings’ owners and songwriters.

Taking a painting and interpreting musically: no infringement. Transformation is an element of public use, and image abstracted as music is quite transformative.

Incidentally, the art work’s title is not protected, just as a song’s title is not.

If I use AI to compose, the way it’s going, whatever AI generated cannot be copyrighted.

I’m no attorney.

When I tell people the actual time of a gig I'm playing I feel like Penn & Teller exposing Three Card Monte dealers. I've never liked the practice of announcing a showtime of 8:00 when it's really 10:30. Since 8:00 shows occasionally do start at 8 this is impossible to navigate.

Worsening Weather Is Igniting a $25 Billion Market

"Against a backdrop of rising climate volatility and social shifts, demand for #WeatherDerivatives is surging.

While a [catastrophe] bond may pay out if a 100-year storm tears through a community, a weather derivative can compensate a tourism business if there are too many rainy days, or a farmer if a hot summer stresses her crops."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-04/climate-change-costs-blunted-by-25-billion-weather-derivatives-market

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars The USA savings & loan/junk bonds crisis of the late 1980s and the financial meltdown of 2007 had a common cause. Risks were underestimated, possibly obfuscated. With junk bonds, the evangelists relied on a theory that the high risks which justified high returns were overstated, thus something that looked like clever arbitrage.

Besides the inversions when owners collect for not providing services, should an investor believe the fund managers have the probabilities correct?

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@momo And, while the derivative market assumed the underlying assets safe, because of historic records for housing, lenders were expanding (and management taking big bonuses) via no income/no verification loans.

But let’s not deep dive those histories. My point is that these types of market devices rely on historical statistics and I believe that climate and weather are too complex and the interaction with people is too vast to say that it will be addressable with business school gimmicks.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars This being asked of someone living in Southern California, where home insurers are leaving the market because fire risk looks too large to them.

I understand how it is analogous, but are the actuarial data as comprehensive and precise for 100 year storms, etc.? And, if weather damage probability is underestimated, what happens when claims exceed assets?

(And, I’ll note that it’s not being called insurance. I would guess it’s to avoid more strict regulations and accountability.)

Question to my American friends here:
In American movies people regularly throw themselves on their beds with shoes on and everything. Shoes and street clothes on the sheets, shoes on the pillow and so on.

We’re a bunch of drunk Germans at a party rn wondering if this is a movie thing or if you actually do this.

Political campaigns are filled with young workers and while I can accept youth explaining a person’s ethical or moral lapses, if looks back do not acknowledge the import and wrongness of actions, then the character core of knowing right from wrong and taking responsibility were and will be never there.

@Brandi_Buchman For the sake of argument, let’s say it’s true. Then isn’t this pleading akin to someone charged with bank robbery saying their case should be tossed because another bank robber got away with it?

As to the substance, in 2016 he kept asserting that the Clintons and their foundation were doing shady things. History has shown, especially re: non-profits, Trump’s statements are confessions in accusation clothing.

@derthomas @Kitty @HailsandAles @SimoRavens19. “Sand Dancing” is our homage to the Go-Gos and Bangles. As “To All That’s Gone Goodbye,” that has singer-songwriter verses and a sea chanty chorus.

TuneCore—I have one song being distributed by them—sent an e-mail to explain why Spotify (ptui) stopped paying us small ones licensing fees. It cost too much.

And Boo Hoo.

The distributors that are indies’ top choices have as a feature that we artists keep all we earn. That’s nice, but if they were taking a slice, they abso-effin-lutely would have told Spotify (ptui) tough toenails, pay us.

Instead, they said “Ok,” and did not do the right thing by their clients.

Not angry, disappointed.

Pretty much #Pop as the A-side evokes the 1960s James Bond Title Song style to our own leaning to the John Le Carré formulation of that world. (Yes, me for Shirley Bassey is admittedly a poor trade.) The B-side takes us to the US Southwest of the movies.

Listening to The Ezra Klein Show (What if Dario Amodei Is Right About A.I.?): https://nytimes.com/2024/04/12/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-dario-amodei.html

Back in 2018, Dario Amodei worked at OpenAI. And looking at one of its first A.I. models, he wondered: What would happen as you fed an artificial intelligence more and more data? He and his colleagues decided to study it, and they found that the A.I. didn’t just get better with more data; it got better exponentially.

#Podcast #LLM #AI

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@ianRobinson Common sense would suggest that while the growth may be exponential for a bit, there would be an asymptote.

Also and unfairly, because I will not listen to the program, what were the metrics used to evaluate “better?” Were they suggesting 2n source data -> n^2 correctness? As I believe this is essentially applied probability theory, were they asserting the unsurprising result that larger sample sets increases confidence values?

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@dmandl The thing is, at the level of touring bands wanting a national audience, this was always the case. In the 80s we were noting the disappearance of venues and dropping of tour support by record labels as increasing the head winds of breaking an act.

Any kid betting their economic future on a career as a musician is playing some long odds.

As to big picture, I think a collapse or transformation of the whole live thing is forthcoming. Will it extend to day job-weekend bar player? Hope not.
