In this, the Year of our Lord 2024, somehow there are still commercial websites that forbid the pasting of 16-digit credit card numbers into web forms, making you type it yourself. This seems disadvantageous for many different kinds of user, from me (irritated and briefly inconvenienced) to those with cognitive or other difficulties who might be seriously challenged by this to-and-fro task. You're leaving money on the table, people.

Your regular reminder that JKR is not Scottish, and does not, cannot and should not presume to speak for Scotland. Like her books if you want, but judge the author by her actions in the real world. Get out of my country’s politics with your hate and bigotry. These are my friends and family.

@otfrom @adrianh No idea. But if so, she’d do well to read up on what a modern-day, egalitarian social democracy looks like. Otherwise she can go back to whatever regressive, witch-hunting shithole she came from. That kind of thing is not appropriate or welcome in Scotland as far as I’m concerned.

@joelanman Thanks for the tip. I’ve mostly held off using them because, well, ethics. Though also I’m really concerned about the environmental footprint.

I got a stainless steel frying pan, but I have to scrub it every time - dishwasher doesn't get it clean. Am I using it wrong?

finiteattention,
@finiteattention@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman While cast iron needs seasoning with oil per the above, stainless steel might need soaking. I find the dishwasher softens it up and makes the scrubby-pad last chapter easy. But if you’re still finding bits of food stuck to the pan after the dishwasher is done, I might suggest that the pan wasn’t hot enough when you put the oil and then the food in?

finiteattention,
@finiteattention@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman If it’s egg then IMO you’ll maybe get away with a fried egg if fat is plentiful, added just before the egg, when the pan is hot, but I’ve given up on using stainless steel for scrambled eggs/omelette. Cast iron (let it get hot before anything goes in, including oil/fat) is my go-to. Teflon is also fine (we don’t have it, but I can’t fault it as a frying surface.)

    We have measured something researchers call beliefs about "role-based communal affordances" in my lab or in other words: how much do software developers think that the job of being a software developer includes helping other people and improving their lives? And the answer is A LOT of professional developers think this is important and see this as part of their identity.

    People's beliefs about the communal affordances of software work is an undermeasured, underappreciated important thing imo.

    @grimalkina If you haven’t come across Being Glue before, I think it’s a great set of ideas communicated really well. Mostly it’s coming from a place of “how do you make this stuff work for you instead of doing the work anyway without it being appreciated”, but I’m mentioning it here because I think sharing the message and getting it recognised more widely might help raise awareness of this as a valuable skill set we don’t talk enough about, also for non-glue people.

    huh, Bluesky's feed options are cool:

    finiteattention,
    @finiteattention@mastodon.social avatar

    @joelanman There’s some cool feed customisation, at least as I understand it. I find some of the settings (the way they’re explained) quite confusing: “show/hide replies”: is that also replies to me? Or just other people’s replies to others? How does it work in combination with the replies filter? Etc. I think there’s some fine-tuning required there, and when I say fine-tuning what I really mean is testing by going outside the building ;P

    @joelanman The equivalent in Copenhagen has a great control panel decal, and I nearly went out of my mind with joy when a technician got on board, opened it up, and there were the real controls underneath.

    Underneath the pretend control panel, opened up by a technician, is a real panel with actual controls. Honestly it kind of looks more exiting: way more switches and knobs.

    Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?

    Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists like Carnegie & Rockefeller.

    But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.

    Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on.

    any tips for getting rid of musty smell from clothes? I've tried bicarb of soda, vinegar, heated drying rack as soon as the wash is done and nothing works. I think my washing machine is cursed

    finiteattention,
    @finiteattention@mastodon.social avatar

    @joelanman Freezer if you have one? I mean, that’s generally for dust mites/moths, but if the source is biological, that might kill it. Also FWIW, musty to me is usually because the laundry sat overnight or even a day or two in the washing machine before I got around to hanging it up. Relaundering usually fixes it, maybe with a bit more laundry powder/liquid than usual? Vanish powder as well if you don’t mind the extra chemicals.

    any recommendations for the best spiced tea (chai?) quite like Tea India and Chai Xpress myself

    finiteattention,

    @joelanman This beast is tremendous. No black tea, just balls-out cinnamon with small concessions to other spices. Sometimes I put one bag of this and one of black tea in the teapot. Grand on its own, but I also like it with oat milk and some honey for the proper chai experience. Leave the bag in, I dare you 🔥

    Learned recently why guns like gatlings and mini guns spin - barrels get too hot when you fire them quickly, so the solution is lots of barrels and rotate between them, give them a chance to cool
