those devs and tech “influencers” who pioneered the technical work of putting “AI” shit in everything everywhere, and are—for the most part—the assholes who enabled our brave new “AI” world by actually figuring out how to make it run, are also going to be the people who get credit for criticising it after the bubble pops, aren’t they?

Everybody will latch onto their vague concerns and ignore the fact that they literally implemented the shit that got smeared everywhere, aren’t they?

@baldur at least some, yeah

I applaud Apple for their new iPad ad: "We are a huge corporate machine that will crush anything you love in order to make a buck" is refreshingly honest.

Microsoft has deep pockets but at some point they need to see returns. Them shattering 4 game studios they recently bought is more that one sad singular fact. At some point every business unit there needs to show results. Which means you will see a lot more aggressive monetization for "AI" stuff given that at least half that "industry" is just propped up by MS's wallet.

Edit: Found it, it's sfdisk. Thanks @tante and @trilader!

I'm looking for a specific command-line utility for Linux to do partition and file system manipulation. It's not fdisk.

I remember that it had an option to remove existing filesystem signatures, and you could pass it a desired partition layout as command line arguments, which it would then create.

But I can't remember the name, and it's 2024 so search engines suck.

What's the name of the tool I'm looking for?

tante,

@scy sfdisk is very limited but does that kind of stuff

@achim I want to experiment with it at work (building digitally augmented exhibitions).

Mozilla celebrates their "AI" project.

  • By pointing at their Discord
  • project also directly pays a fascist

Just if you were wondering how things in tech are going.

Investigative reporter opens a new independent publication because the investigative publication got too tame and corporate.

So he of course opens it on Substack, the platform that loves Nazis and won't ban them.

I mean not the platform. There are so many. Shopify also loves making money of Nazis of course.

Sometimes you have to be pragmatic to find space for the topics you care about but I kinda draw the line at trying to frame "maintenance" in the language of "innovation"

How many companies adopted MongoDB because “it’s the future!” and are now stuck with it until insolvency or the heat-death of the universe, whichever comes first?

Be careful about making technical decisions based on bubble logic

tante,

@baldur just have github copilot write you the migration logic to a different platform

It's funny cause it hits the right targets (Big Tech) but the way that GDPR has become mostly a lever to do a replacement-punishment is kinda weird.

Sure, you now have a stick to beat MetaMicrosoftGoogle's money bags with but is it really about privacy? About an affirmative use that's based on an actual vision for how privacy in connected societies should work? Or is it just "I can't get you for what I feel you do wrong so I'll try to frame it as a privacy issue"? Feels like the latter.

tante,
@tante@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@mspro I don't think it's the same though it has a bit of it yeah.
