We use self-closing syntax in HTML where it doesn't do anything. People see it and assume it does something.

Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

@jaffathecake consistency, maybe? from a mental load standpoint the idea that we should close all the tags is simpler than remembering which tags we should and shouldn't close.

Another instance where something that was meant to simplify writing code ends up making it harder.

I will be hosting a Fuzz kit building workshop in Berlin on February 25. This is for beginners, no prior experience or tools necessary!

Details: https://pedalmarkt.com/products/25-02-2024-build-laran-fuzz-from-gorva-mae

@dec_hl uuuu interesting! I have no idea! If you like and it's not too much trouble, we can try it at the shop with other fuzzes. I don't have any Larans assembled unfortunately, but there's plenty of other pedals around.

This “Freedom to the Scottsboro prisoners” Soviet poster from 1932 is intense

@flpvsk@mastodon.social avatar

@kevinrothrock just read about it, and I'd say that case is intense

For reference for people interested: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsboro_Boys

One part of the Soviet past I think about is how the Soviets were on the right side of political and social struggle in many cases.

And how that might have been accidental just because their rivals happened to be on the wrong side of that struggle.

Apartheid in South Africa is another example.

HTML purists:
> Look, HTML is great and has everything you need. You don't need no filthy javascript to create a website!

Also HTML purists quietly:
> What you do need is custom half-baked languages / syntax and a bunch of string manipulation tools. Here's an upper-lip-hair library.

> Oh you'd also need a bunch of hidden JS to manage data, templates, dependencies, images. Btw it has no API you can hook up to.

> You didn't actually think we'd force you to write HTML, did you!?

It's the last day of the year- how about another "No Stupid Questions" thread?

Drop your questions about open hardware, programming, music tech, 3d printing, life, or whatever below and I'll do my best to answer them! Don't be shy!

@stargirl How was your experience building and running your own pick&place machine so far?

Passed my exams and waiting for a callsign (yay 🥳)

Would love to start with an ssb/cw qrp transceiver. There are appealing kit options from qrplabs and dl2man but nothing fully open source?

Are there good open source radios?

Or maybe good resources on how to start designing one? I'm comfortable designing audio circuits. RF is of course harder, but perhaps all it takes is a few good books or blogs 🤓

Trying out after using for a decade. I like it! Appreciate the evil-mode, love lisp, love the amount of built-in quality of life features (I can just display time in multiple configurable timezones out of the box? nice!)

Main downside so far: it is kinda sluggish once you add your language-server support and a few plugins.

@dekkzz76 age: maybe 8 years. it's a beefy desktop machine, 16GB RAM, 8 core CPU.

using MELPA. started with an empty config, added evil, lsp, maybe a couple other minor plugins but that's it.

Typing has a significant delay after installing and configuring lsp to be used with typescript (to be fair I don't know what I'm doing, mostly copying configs from docs & blogs).
