The kinda counterpart to the Torment Nexus is that sometimes as a writer you're not really trying to write a cautionary tale so much as thinking that if the Torment Nexus did exist, you personally would not be able to resist it, and would have a lot of fun (and probably screw up your life big time) abusing the Torment Nexus.

So you're writing about the Torment Nexus because it doesn't exist and writing about it is as close as you can get to being able to play with it.

My temp job hasn't been able to have any hours for me for about a month, thanks to technical issues (I can't exactly run the scanner if the scanner is broken!), so I'm kinda completely broke at the moment.
If you've got a spare couple of dollars, it'd really help me get to the next paycheck.

I could go down the long rabbithole of figuring out how to call g*mp's image manipulation tools from a commandline or API, or getting imagemagick installed on this PC and figuring out how to port it over there...

or I could be silly and take advantage of the fact that I'm applying gamma ramps to an 8-bit greyscale image. What's the difference between the "before" and "after" images? a different palette.

two of the best feelings when programming are:

  1. figuring out a really clever way to solve a problem
  2. figuring out a really stupid way to solve a problem

I found an amazon listing that is for an "HD DVD player"

by which they mean a DVD player that supports HD output, because it's an upscaler.

YALL KNOW HD-DVD IS A DIFFERENT THING, RIGHT?

I'm disappointed that progress in dial up modems seems to have stopped around 2002. You can buy a PCIe modem and it'll be 56k just like the PCI modem you bought back in 2000!

We should invest more into improving modems that work over plain old telephone lines.

I wonder how illegal it would be if you opened up a VHS rental store today, and had unofficial VHS copies of modern films, dubbed from either Netflix or uhd 4k blurays

I've been trying to google/amazon this and having basically no results, so I'm asking here in case anyone knows:

I need graph paper. Specifically I need LARGE graph paper. Like, not an A4 sheet, I need A1-A0 (24/33" or 33x46").
4x4 per inch, or 5x5 per inch grid spaces. I basically need a graph paper with a TON of squares, and I'm not finding it.

New possibility. I really should have a shift key on this but I think I can make login/fill context sensitive.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

HOPEFULLY FINAL EDITION: I've got login/fill split, and I added an ENHANCE button. originally it was going to say "INV. COLOR" but my algorithm is slightly more complicated, thus... "enhance"

I love when the world tells older women they are becoming irrelevant and invisible, and they're just like, Good, now I can do what I want, and no one will bother me.

foone,

@RickiTarr yeah! It's been my experience that every remotely functioning company has one of her. If they get big enough they have one per department. She knows how to get things done, she knows where the bodies are buried, and 90% of the companies work couldn't get done without her.

It's funny how I've seen multiple people talking about how Microsoft Recall doesn't take pictures of DRM media, as if this was a conscious decision the Recall team made, and not just a natural consequence of how screenshots already work on modern windows.

Based on this idea:
https://aus.social/@Unixbigot/112572811010797144

How about an email client that uses Glide, the 3DFX 3d rendering library?
Specifically targeting the voodoo 2. (I know it's PCI, but there are PCI->PCIe adapters).

The OS can't screenshot it because the OS has no idea what pixels are there!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

on the plus side, it's physically impossible for any AI bullshit to screenshot it, unless you accidentally attach a VGA capture device or point a camera at the monitor

Silly question:
You know how there are HDMI splitters/adapters that strip DRM?

Are there any that do the opposite? Add DRM?

Like, if I want my computer to think my VCR's HDMI signal is Highly Copyrighted Stuff, can I do that?

The worst part about repairing a dryer over several days is that by the time you're finally able to put it back together, you have no idea where the SCSI cable went.
Gotta check all the DIY repair YouTube videos to see where this came from.

we need metacomputers.

one of the big features of computers and how they improved productivity was how they let us automate a lot of things that we had to do by hand before.

well, most of the things I have to do by hand these days involve badly designed software.

Computers are great at waiting! They can just sit there in a loop waiting for a response, periodically trying again if needed.

Computers are great at waiting, but I, a (presumed) human with ADHD, am very shit at it. That's why I write software to wait for me, so I can do other stuff while the cloud is being slow

A funny thing about Google's terrible "AI" is that sometimes when people try to defend it, they say "but if you don't want Google to use 'AI', wouldn't that mean they'd have to remove 'Featured snippets' also?", and this is extremely humorous because featured snippets are also consistently terrible and I've been watching people make fun of them constantly for like ten years

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@mcc it's fun because they haven't actually removed featured snippets, so sometimes you have to scroll past both wrong answers to get to the results
