Dad, husband, business owner. Arrowtowner, ditch-digger and wilding pine mass-murderer. We're all different, and that's a good thing.

After 26 years, there's a new setter for cryptic . Stumped for two days by the last clue... and it's the name of the old setter. Nice!

@bananabob Yeah, not sure I have the right answer for that one. If I have, then the clue should read "Around Easter Monday morning tops..."

So now stuff is totally unusable what news site is anyone looking at, do we even have one worthwhile any more?

@Rjdlandscapes The Spinoff is another option. I like (including financially support), but they've really shot themselves in the foot with this.

I am objectively very bad at visual art. I am bad at vision, period - I'm astigmatic, shortsighted, color blind, and often miss visual details others see. I can't even draw a stick-figure. To top things off, I have cataracts in both eyes and my book publishing/touring schedule is so intense that I keep having to reschedule the surgeries. But despite my vast visual deficits, I thoroughly enjoy making collages for this blog.

Sorry, but I don't believe @pluralistic is one person. https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/21/collages-r-us/ shows off a year of illustrations that look like a year's-worth of work in themselves, yet each one is attached to a thought-provoking essay that would take me a month to produce.

Then he'd have us believe he's written, published and promoted several books at the same time.

If he is one person, he must be the most prodigiously productive human ever. And I hope he enjoys a (short) break during the calendar roll-over.

That is all.

Is there a compiled programming language with a Python-like syntax?

foxylad,
@foxylad@mastodon.nz avatar

@gregorni @nedbat @boracle You're asking for a compiler to check types that you don't specify. That's like asking a coder to write you an app without saying what you want the app to do.

So ask an LLM, I guess...

If you were to pick one web development blog post that played a huge part in changing or influencing how you build on the web—which blog post would it be?

foxylad,
@foxylad@mastodon.nz avatar

@zachleat Before many of you were born, blog posts were printed out on paper and gathered into things called a books.

Designing Web Usability by Jakob Nielson transformed my approach to web design, most notably by not being afraid of simplicity. Millions of people owe that book thanks for making their web experience better.

OK Fediverse - our AirBNB has been cancelled at the last moment, and we need a furnished flat for a week from tomorrow (Sunday).

Mature (late 50s) tidy non-smoking couple visiting from New Zealand.

Help!

Wow! I'm on a kiwi instance, but this message got boosted literally around the globe - the fediverse works!

Thanks to everyone who boosted, and particularly to those who got back to me with suggestions - you're awesome!. We're now sorted with a nice wee place close to where we need to be.

    @doctormo I came across something almost those lines a couple of months back, part of the fediverse, I think. I thought it was called carrot, but I can't find it now ☹️
