A word about all the people I've pissed off with this week's blog post:

https://mastodon.social/

(When I woke up this morning, I removed about 25 comments !!)

I wonder if I feel free to write a blog post that I know will anger people because I don't monetize.

I have ads, but it pays a tiny fraction of the cost of maintaining a website and using MailChimp. People might be surprised at how much my blogging venture costs.

A few years ago Substack tried to recruit me . . .

@Teri_Kanefield A thought (or two) about who is/isn't a conspiracist: That word is loaded; we would do better to split between uninformed/misinformed speculation (most of us), authoritative speculation, and conspiracists.

Most people don't speculate out of a desire to spread disinfo; they/we do it because provocative actions naturally elicit them. Labeling them/us as conspiracists shuts their/our brains down and results in defensiveness.

The Catholic Church has difficulty working through two conflicting principles of good/evil and peace. I'll just leave it at that.

People who speak directly with Biden have constantly and consistently said that he's perfectly fine.

And now, the GOP are complaining about how rough he was on them at the SOTU.

Ain't life a bitch?

Having read a half-dozen books on (which isn't all that much, nonetheless...) I can confidently say that the last two are the best.

"Dirty Laundry", Richard Pink and Roxanne Emery

This is the book to get and give to ppl close to you, so that they get a clear-eyed view of what you're going through and how they can support.

"Taking Charge of Adult ADHD", Russell Barkley

It's a comprehensive, concise, plain language read with lots of details and steps from an expert.

To reiterate:

That SCOTUS denied certiorari to Jack Smith's "insurrection" case against Trump does not mean Trump "won".

Smith did not provide a reason for SCOTUS to allow for a shortcut of the normal process.

All he said was that this case was inevitably going to end up at SCOTUS, and therefore they should take it now.

That is not an inevitable outcome. DC appeals could reject Trump and SCOTUS deny certiorari to Trump. Fini.

I have a rule: I will not pay for subscriptions to use software. As soon as a software goes the subscription route, I switch to Open Source.

I believe in perpetual licenses. It's a principle I will not compromise on.

The vibe between and is like night and day.

Threads is attempting to recreate but not fully functional. Because it's owned by , lots of official accounts, sports-related, and all of the news outlets are there.

Whereas Mastodon has a chill vibe with lots of smart, talented, serious people, wanting to spread good stuff, especially their hobbies, and good info about everything.

When Threads connects to the , the Fediverse will expand exponentially.

There aren't a lot of out there that are UL-listed, folding, with an internal 7-speed (Shimano) hub, and cheap -- like $559.

This is crazy cheap. And there's no markup if you want fat tires.

Still, I'm going to wait for Oregon to pass a bill that establishes an e-bike rebate program.

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon Specs say it's a Shimano 7-speed and I don't see an external derailleur. 😄

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon That would be an option, except it's not folding. I love folding bikes, even though you pay a premium for it. So easy to load into the back of the car or in the closet.

Thanks for looking, though. :NiceThumb:

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon The folding bikes almost all universally have a replaceable battery slot in the rectangular frame, secured with a key. This is the Gotrax F1/R1's specific battery case.

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon That depends on how much you want to spend and what capacity you want. They're fairly generic across the board between brands and obscure Chinese manufacturers. You can find them on Amazon. But the Gotrax official battery is $250.

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon Many e-bike manufacturers combine a drive unit with pedals attached to an internal geared hub -- the same internal geared hub used in non-electric bikes.

Here's a screen shot of the Shimano series that shows all the components you need to build/convert a bike to electric.

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon Oh yeah, you're right, it's not a mid drive motor. But you can see the chain directly attached to the hub.

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon I think I figured it out. They're using a brushless motor hub with 5 electronically controlled speeds, not a geared hub Shimano Nexus 7-speed. The site has the specs wrong but the specs are right on Amazon's listing with a clear photo of the brushless motor! 🤣

gkmizuno,
@gkmizuno@mas.to avatar

@schizanon Hope they're standard. LOL.
