Do you love books and history? If so, you'll love this week's Grammar Girl podcast because Peter Sokolowski tells us stories about the special Armed Services Editions of books that were created especially for the troops in WWII.

Listen while you get ready for gatherings this weekend, and you'll have great bits of trivia to share!

I just inserted an editor's note into a document, and I was really tempted to put "Don't @ me" at the end.

Digging into my old Google Analytics data and combining it with this Plausible data, I can now confirm that this Google post is now top-10 all time for Tedium posts, with 46k visits.

Long way to topple this post, which has an eight-year head start and 580,000 pageviews, most of which are from the site that is trying to destroy it

@ernie I'm sad. The Harvard sentences line doesn't seem to work anymore. :(

@grammargirl Okay, very much in left field here, but the Freemasons had an outsized impact on both US and French history.

Have any ritual terms or even shibboleths entered into common usage? I can think of one or two plausible examples but you know more about etymology than I do.

"Hoodwink" seems unlikely but "to give the third degree" seems plausible. That's about all I can come up with.

@profoundlynerdy It looks like "on the level" is another one. https://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/59/messages/117.html

And I know blackballing comes from voting in exclusive or secret societies, and was used by the Masons, but I don't think the term specifically originates from them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackballing

Johns Hopkins is doing a long-COVID survey and apparently is having trouble finding controls -- people who haven't had COVID. If this is you, consider giving them some clicks.

We only smelled gas in the basement, but they wanted to inspect the whole house, and I swear there was a brief moment where I thought “My house is so messy, I’d rather die in a fire than have them traipse through my whole house!” I console myself that they’ve probably seen worse.

Well, they cleared the house and say everything is safe! Not sure what the problem was.

We smelled gas in our house, so now the fire department is here in full gear with masks and oxygen, and they’re clearing the house.

They smell it too, so at least I don’t feel like I’m crazy. Much excitement!

@vpermar Yeah, I looked at the PG&E website, and it said to call 911, which seemed kind of dramatic to me. On the other hand, I had a cousin whose house exploded many years ago, so I am inclined not to take chances.

@grammargirl I was so disappointed to hear an egregious error on your latest podcast that I felt compelled to set the record straight. And so, riffing on an evergreen opening line of a timeless novel, I can only state:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the cardboard tube at the centers of rolls of paper products have always been, and will always be, known as a "der-der".

I trust you will set the record straight in light of this fact.

😉

@yeliab Haha, you had me going there for a second! It's funny though ... you're the second person to let me know your family has a slight variation on the caller's name.
