Know any NYC students, or their parents?

The mayor closed the libraries on Sundays, and is set to close them Saturdays too -- citing budget constraints 📚

The budget's being debated right now!

So, if you live in NYC?

Here's a form that'll auto-send a letter to your city councillor telling them to vote to "keep the libraries open sundays": https://actionnetwork.org/letters/open-the-libraries-nyc/

Forward it to any students in NYC 🤘

Parents can use it too -- just rewrite the opening salutation to say "I'm a parent"

I enjoyed @grammargirl's ep. 980 "Exploring the 'Funnest' Parts of Language with Anne Curzan", esp. the conversation about how language use changes. https://music.youtube.com/podcast/5UpelGMOLb8

Many of the examples (e.g. "calendar" as a verb) add something to the language, whereas one peeve of mine - using "blog" for "blog post" removes something from the language, making it worse.

I'd love to know what you think.

My take: "Accuracy and precision in language" https://qmacro.org/blog/posts/2024/01/22/accuracy-and-precision-in-language/

So, when I was growing up, students at my high school described the devil horns hand gesture—i.e. 🤟or 🤘, sometimes 🤙—using the word “boggs.” It was used essentially the entire time I was in school by most of the male student body, and I have no idea why they described it with this word. I have never heard it beyond my high school days.

Does anyone know why “boggs” was associated with this symbol?

Hello I’m searching for something after a day of not finding it. Does anyone know of any research on the clinical use of the term “absconding” to describe mental health patients? I think I’m after language research. I can’t believe no one has looked into this stigmatising language, I just can’t find it.

I have found implied critique in the introduction of different terms for unsanctioned leaving for dementia patients and children. But absconding/absconsion seems taken for granted for adult mh patients.

@stancarey? @grammargirl? @bright_helpings?

Boosts really appreciated.

Who’s afraid of the jukebox?

The coin-op industry was incredibly reluctant to accept the term “juke box” when it first took root in the 1940s.

This was mostly due to the first part of that word – let’s have a little etymological discussion.

The editing tip I submitted to the ACES Editors Corner was featured in today's email:

"If you come across a misspelling in a manuscript, do a search for that same misspelling. It could be a one-off typo, but there's a good chance the author misspelled that word elsewhere. Search for it as soon as you come across it. Or put it on a list of words to search later so you don’t forget."
