I wonder if there has been a time other than now when more of the NCC pathways along the Ottawa River (both sides) have had so many closures, other than during flooding and rehabilitation. It's kind of astounding how much of it is closed and detoured.

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull it’s not like the single lanes because of construction work just fine around westboro beach for people driving and the NCC could just use 2 of the 4 lanes close to downtown where that long-ass detour is but that’s not a precedent that can be set 🙃

“… how that policy fits in their low-rise community.” Hahaha you live close to Algonquin college and a 2-story building just busts the great character of your community huh? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/proposed-rooming-house-discord-near-algonquin-college-a-sign-of-things-to-come-1.7204363

I’m no stan that government is our lord & saviour but people who dump on government can do anything blah blah never have shit to say about stuff like this. I just don’t understand how it’s hard to wrap your head around that profit. is. all. that. matters. That’s it. Profit will always win. Governments mostly assist in this and sometimes “have” to step in when an airplane company is out here just killing people #cdnpoli https://www.npr.org/2024/05/14/1251477809/boeing-justice-department-charges

The solution is to raise speed limits on highways, because data is stupid and definitely should NOT be used to help inform policy ever https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/opp-number-fatalities-last-year-deadly-year-1.7204528

@johnefrancis @WTL this is the “thoughts and prayers” attitude we need around here

Step-daughter of a friend of ours saw the 11-yr old kid get killed in Rockland, by someone driving a school bus, while they were riding their bike. What the fuck…

I’ve said it a bunch of times but I completely changed the route we take to the kids school which is only 1.2 kms away. We take a ~ 2 km route to avoid the utter mayhem that takes over people during drop offs and pick ups, esp school bus and transport vans

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL I never expected this would be the case for some reason but it’s wildly infuriating to me. We are lucky that there are options esp when the kid wants to wheel himself to school but this route is also seasonal and temporary. On the one hand it doesn’t make sense but on the other it does considering we don’t “really” care about kids at all

This is not cheering for the pay workers get at Chinese EV manufacturing companies or the supply chains etc but the fact that North American car companies have made zero moves to make simple, low cost EVs is pathetic. “Flood the market” blah blah blah. There’s no free market anyway just protectionism, government subsidies and the gatekeeping to keep EVs at $50,000 a piece. Say nothing of the song and dance about getting folks into EVs

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

I guess this is also necessary for the demonization of China by conservatives and the oil and gas sector essential to sell the bit that what #canada does on #climatechange doesn’t matter globally. I’m not cheering for China or their business practices or whatever but the EV market in this country is a fucking joke. My only hope is that perpetual high EV prices force the #publictransit conversation #cdnpoli

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@MichaelPorter I doubt without explicit government regs that will happen?! Also would like speed limitations too please. Every car being 0-60 in less than 4 secs is gunna be great…

I despise this whole section of highway all the way to North Bay. Good fucking thing raising speed limits will produce better outcomes in head on collisions… JK I know the speed limits aren’t being raised here and they are also not enforced. I’d be happy to never have to use this highway ever again https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/highway-417-ottawa-arnprior-kinburn-1.7203959

It is beyond wild to me that the city cut annual funding to the Tulip Festival. Ya’ll are baffled on how to connect Dows Lake and the Byward Market?? Seriously?? The NCC couldn’t even close all of the QED, but no shade to them when they are responsible for any livability in The festival weekends at Dows Lake are the best weekends in this city in the entire year and props to the Feds

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

The kid and I spent every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday last year during the festival. We watched the movies, we walked on the QED, drank lemonade and just enjoyed the space without having to listen to or be around people driving. And then this all goes away without a thought. The 6-8 seater golf carts go away, all the people walking and biking have to be squeezed back onto the worst section of MUP in the city

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@dan613 not trains per se but multiple 6 & 8 seat golf carts moving folks around. Could easily have a fleet moving folks from Lansdowne to Dows Lake and from Lansdowne to the Byward Market

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@plantarum hmm maybe? Gotta say riding through Dows Lake I would never have guessed the parking was gone from there. I'm far more cynical about why as it just makes no sense anyway I look at it that is not vindictive towards the NCC or residents

Our 4-yr old dropping tonight that some of his friends at school have autism wasn’t near the top of my list of things he would randomly drop. It’s clear his teachers have approached this with a lot of care and empathy and he’s really intrigued and excited that he has friends whose brains, well may or may not work the same as his and that he’s lucky to have friends with autism… I was probably 25 the first time I heard the term at all #autism #ottawa #kids

Commanda Bridge to Alexandra Bridge to the Corktown Bridge is the best parkway to QED connection on weekends. Esp with the new separated lane by the Senate building now, it’s the lowest stress route we’ve taken in a long time

grivettcarnac,

@casseagull they did! I was shocked to be honest. It’s really good for I must say. Definitely worth skipping Laurier or whatever Wellington is supposed to be

grivettcarnac, to Canada

First it’s very funny to state Canada has a pandemic plan. Second the fact that the system of food production isnt even of question but that of “how fast can governments help fund for profit creation of vaccines” isn’t surprising. There’s been a steady drip of H5N1 news about the levels of acceptable panic, but with basic transmissible infections like whooping cough spreading, I feel like optimism is just bullshit https://apple.news/ALiMWGdUQQxy0nK-NEj0ppg

My world for a uni-directional eastbound lane on the parkway and a permanent westbound lane for active use so this could be a permanent loop
