this feels like just one of many completely shocking and incredibly powerful innovations that will result from transformer models in the next two decades that we will all look at and casually say “yeah i guess that makes sense” as if it is nothing

@venkatasg that makes sense. my understanding of these models is that they can locate patterns so complex that humans cannot see them. i’m not super surprised that they wouldn’t be great at a form that’s really about ingenuity

Newsletters are just blogs anyways. Maybe set-up your paywall for your blog without a Nazi-supporting provider?

Just a thought.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@tante @tb this might just be my pet issue but i see a lot of discussion around “do we let nazis in our free speech absolutism” but if they want to stand up for free speech absolutism they have to actually stand up for it always. that’s what it means to have values. instead, they ban sex workers and fan fiction writers.

at least if they stood up there would be a conversation. but they don’t. substack isn’t a free speech absolutist, they’re just cowards stringing words together

the NYT’s dogged insistence that they invented connections, a game so blatantly copied that they even copied the name, is so bizarre to witness.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

also! it is totally cool to take big inspiration from an old game! but it’s good to at least credit it and/or really evolve it… to do neither and on top of that pretend like you invented it is uhhhh really quite a move from a company that wants their name to be synonymous with integrity and standards.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eviltrout yeah big red flag when someone says something like that instead of just giving examples

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ZacBelado ah yeah i noticed that mechanic on puzzgrid.com

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@cbirdsong @eviltrout yikes yeah and of course never forget when knight claimed credit for wordle and was fact checked with an editors note in an interview with the NYT

@helvetica have you played Liar’s Dice?
It’s one of those really simple games where the complexity comes from the players and I’d guess house rules could make for a lot of variation.
Been playing it a bunch with friends - up to 3-6 players is the real sweet spot.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson yes! it is my #1 favorite dice game. these are my house rules. i think they make the game very dynamic and make it work with up to 12+ ppl.

  • 1s are wild (cannot be claimed, counts as everything)
  • if you are called and lie, you lose 1 die. if you call someone’s bluff and are wrong, lose all dice immediately
helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson imo the only issue with LD is that the math is very doable, so my rules disincentivize calling so everything gets really ridiculous. they also speed up the slow end, and they make it harder to keep up with the math because the total number of dice changes dramatically

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson yeah it is an incredible game! it’s great at bars too since you can play with like a $12 box of 30 dice and who cares if you lose some

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson let me know how it goes if you try my rules!

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson ooh interesting!

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson what do you mean by “you can’t change the number on the dice”?

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theowatson oh yeah that makes sense. wow can’t change the number !! that is wild. that would definitely help the one die person yeah

    Today we launched a major revamp of Wordbind over on Puzzmo.

    I’m really proud of what @games_by_jack @samanbb and I were able to accomplish with this game.

    It’s an anagram game without the bit where you have to excavate every single word, and with a variety of solution sets.

    Check it out if you have a puzzmo subscription — https://www.puzzmo.com/play/wordbind/
