Currently reading HItchhikers Guide to the Galaxy to the little one and two chapters in it’s a hit. Never laughed so hard during stories. Can’t recommend it enough.

I truly feel that the moment I liberated myself from the ideas of ‘doing / learning things for productivity / success’, my relationship with everything changed. Like wdym I can learn typography without becoming a designer, learn to play an instrument without ever performing, and just.. be?

There’s a lot of info about ‘perfecting a craft’ but I’d bet it would help most people to just ‘dabble in a craft’

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@skinnylatte one of my most meaningful art classes in college was called “digital sketchbook”. we had to use all kinds of different pieces of technology to create are but we were forbidden from finishing anything.

really a meaningful experience to be forced to work that way

perfect example of loss aversion. our table wobbled for 8 years because we didn’t want to reduce the number of protective rubber feet by removing the remaining three

I don't know who else out there has my very specific problem of not wanting to use google software but — fastmail finally (as of today?) supports exactly one modern calendar application (https://morgen.so).

I've been using it for like 5 hours and it is amazing to actually be able to send meeting requests, have scheduled open time, and be able to accept meeting requests without going to fastmail.com

If you also have this problem — big recommendation from me!

helvetica,

@iomegadrive oh that may be new. when i first started using fantastical they did not and it was annoying to not be able to approve events.

@Hempuli this is really nice! I feel a bit like the “allowed to cross itself" rule can be pretty brain-breaking, but maybe that's needed for really advanced puzzles! I admit i haven't solved the harder ones.

I was thinking this might be an easier to parse design:

@nephariuz my only specific recommendation is that the game is very ugly on a sp101 screen and beautiful on the original gba with the washed out colors (for which it was intended). Im not sure what you can do with that information, i dunno the state of emulators these days. but on my analogue pocket i can set the screen filters to the correct style

Hey :) I think I found a bug with Good Sudoku (I'm using the Arcade version, if that's important).

I managed to get an impossible rectangle in the puzzle, so decided to press the Hint button to get the "Incorrectly Filled" message and undo my mistake. Instead, it highlighted a hidden single. After selecting that, I went on to complete the puzzle with no other issues.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@fstorr impossible rectangles must be in exactly 2 houses.

This really drives home something about LLM systems. They’re very expensive to run, both to train and per-query, and hard to make cheaper. I expect them to get more expensive to run. They’re currently sold at a big loss to establish monopoly power and then raise prices dramatically. That’s the stated business plan.

If you’re building your business to rely on LLM, you need to factor in what you‘ll do when they pivot to making money, or they pull back because they can’t.

helvetica,
@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@cocoaphony @grumpygamer @theregister hmmmmmmm seems like the cutting edge models are pretty expensive to run at scale, which makes sense. I agree it seems kind of wild to build a business running on top of licensable ai — it's already too expensive.

i’m just kind of surprised how often tech companies tilt towards “cool” instead of “fun”

a lot of times “fun” is actually the good direction for adoption

@smplfi nope, but those times are per piece. check instructions to see more about the scoring
