Just learned the term "wait mode" for the ADHD phenomenon where you can't start anything because there's a scheduled thing coming up. That is a useful goddamn term! The list of tips that's circulating was not very helpful, but here's a pretty good description: https://www.getinflow.io/post/waiting-mode-hard-to-be-productive-when-you-have-plans

This is why I see the Android team repeatedly breaking reminders and alarms -- silently dropping geofenced reminders, changing the alarm noise to silence on an OS update (!!!) -- as an accessibility issue.

jfmcgrath,

@cliffle The fact that my android phone doesn't have a simple way to snooze a calendar event (which I like to use for things like vacuuming because it takes up tangible time in my day) is a serious accessibility problem.

Me talking to a coworker this morning about an old process.

Me: I'll double check that <thing1> isn't doing something there.
Him: That process doesn't access that stuff.
Me: Weeeelllllll.......

David Tennant's 10th Doctor saying, "Well" and then turning away in a way that implies he knows something the viewer doesn't.

jfmcgrath,

@mike "it's fine, nothing uses that database anymore, turn it off."

jfmcgrath,

@mike It's especially fun when you're on both sides of the same shutdown.

Boss: "You don't have anything urgent going on in the next half hour, do you?"

Me: "Well, I have to pee."

Back at work after a lovely week away from the internet at my mother's. Kid learned how to ride a bike! My carpal tunnel and scroll-wheel elbow are much improved! My inbox is . . .

Oh dear.

Well THIS IS INSANITY

According to The Street, Google is offering employees a "special" rate of $99 per night at a hotel on or near its work campus so that employees forced to return to office have an option of sleeping closer and not commuting

That's $99 out of pocket per night...to sleep at work...when you can do your job remotely from anywhere.

https://www.thestreet.com/employment/google-return-to-the-office-program

jfmcgrath,

@jilleduffy “Just imagine no commute to the office in the morning and instead, you could have an extra hour of sleep and less friction,” the offer said.

But I could also have that while . . . Working from home?

@proactiveservices If you follow Canadian politics and history at all closely, you'll soon realise that we are a country created and governed by both.

jfmcgrath,

@proactiveservices Yeah, and instead of white horsehair courtroom wigs, theirs are made out of wood shavings.

I can tell everyone in the office is much younger than me, because someone was moving a bunch of equipment on a dolly, said "I can't turn right," then looked at me blankly when I said "Sure you can, you're an ambiturner."

The best way to charm an introvert is from afar.

But not using a phone.

Or any sort of real-time communication.

Or an expectation of reply.

jfmcgrath,

@maxleibman We like gifts of books and snacks left in communal areas.

While sitting through the interminable cycle of #PawPatrol that plays in my house on the weekends, I have to wonder if anyone has ever explained how Ryder became a 10-year-old #TonyStark

@maxleibman that's what happens when your deputy mayor is a chicken

Years ago, I heard a podcaster (I believe it was @siracusa) describe a video of his young child reaching for the camera, saying something like, "Want to be careful with it! Want to be careful with it!"

I have my own version of that now: we recently moved into a new house with nice blinds on every window, and our not-quite-two-year-old now refers to the cords that open and close the blinds as "the let go."

jfmcgrath,

@maxleibman @siracusa my 4 year old announces that he is 'being gentle' when petting the cats now.

The cats are unsure if they agree.

Hey, fellow and other other types: Someone in our office showed me the Remarkable 2 notetaking tablet and it looks amazing, but is crazy expensive. Any real world reviews for me?

Drove past a Buick Enclave on the way to work this morning. That thing is aptly named, an entire family of five could easily live in a car that size.

jfmcgrath,

Related: a few weeks back I parked next to a Lincoln Navigator at the mall. The size comparison between our two vehicles is bonkers.

Not looking forward to trying to find a reasonably-priced compact car when mine finally kicks the bucket.

jfmcgrath,

@itsthejoker And those LED headlights! Their DRLs are brighter than my high beams!

(granted, my 17-year-old high beams probably used to be brighter)

Thoughts on and - I strongly prefer being onsite, because I have and get terribly distracted in my house (kid, cats, chores, etc). However: I have an office with a door at work, my hours are VERY flexible, and I only have a 15 minute commute by car. My experience is not universal (and in my perfect world, I'd go the office and everyone else would )

jfmcgrath,

@maxleibman I would never survive in a cube farm again. If that was the choice, I'd be full remote in a heartbeat; productivity suffers, but mental health wins.
