Was this a time traveling cybertruck? It looks like it was found footage from a VHS tape.

Photoelectric encoding isn't a good fit for full sized keyboards but it might be a good technology for miniatures where the usual grid of switches and diodes won't fit and rollover isn't crucial. I don't need to resort to anything that complex for 1:3 scale but below that things get pretty tight.
Anyway, if you're interested in historical tech for keyboard input then here you go:

If nothing else, I love the novelty of this. Seems like one could get all weird by not just blocking light but redirecting it by mirror or light pipe. Could even use filters to have selective wavelengths blocked.

Apple’s failure to make a flagship iMac available to pro creatives pisses me off so much that I find myself considering buying a high end windows machine.

But then I think about what it’s like to work on Windows and I’m ashamed.

jhoward,
@jhoward@social.sdf.org avatar

@dgar
I've been in on for years and it has been delightful. Well, almost. The VST space in Linux is pretty terrible. There are "shims" that get it to work, but that part isn't fun.

I've done windows too, when there's that plugin that I've just got to use. It's not terrible, but it does always feel like a step back from Linux.

Not done much Mac, but every time I try it feels like their UI treats me like a child.

My iGaging 1-2" micrometer works great, except that it resets and loses its zero every time I actually measure something with it. Which, being interpreted, means I am running kind of blind in that range.

I guess I should take it apart and try to fix it before buying a new micrometer. sigh.

If you've been watching my videos for a while, you may have noticed this Silvertone radio in the set. It's an AM/FM set from 1952.

I restored it when I was in high school (I think) by replacing its capacitors but never got into the habit of using it since its FM reception was a bit spotty.

Well I finally hooked up a decent antenna to it and while it's still not able to tune in perfectly well, it's been a pleasure to use this again!

Pretty sure when someone says "so and so has balls of steel" they're talking about something like these.

They're threaded, so to me that implies they're capable of field repair and upgrade. And when not needed, they can be detached to hold the picnic blanket down at the beach.

Risk taker indeed. Watch out for that curved screen. My wife just broke hers (and had in a case). Glass right to the edge seems like such a bad idea for actual real world use. But then I'm the function then form type.
