One of the things I loved about joining and the as a whole was finding similar kinds of friendly and positive interactions I found in the earlier days, as-well as later in the early days. There's general friendliness, and more and more and more folk are joining every day. It's real nice, but also not the complete picture, of course.

jibsaramnim,

What I'm struggling a bit with is the more emotional sides, especially those driven by quick reactions. Combined with the tendency of folk on the internet usually rounding up/down nuances, there seem to be fuses laid out all over the place, ready to be lit by the slightest trigger.

Often times these can be good things. Not pleasant, mind you, but good in that they help expose limitations in our collective thinking, or simply expose less ideal behaviors or mindsets of individuals, for example.

jibsaramnim,

I generally try to stay away from sharing (strong) opinions on many subjects online these days. Partly because opinions are like assholes —everybody's got one— but mostly also because people that look like me already have had enough opinions to last a few more lifetimes at least, that have often resulted in difficulty (to say the least). Be it for women, minorities, or other marginalized groups of people. Or heck, even languages sometimes.

jibsaramnim,

When trying to find a home here, I chose one that seemed primarily focused on free and open source software. Something I have been embracing in my life as much as I can, especially the last few years. It felt like the right choice, or as right as it could be anyway. I didn't want analysis paralysis to prevent me from really giving Mastodon a try, back when I had to pick a place to start.

I still care for , but as with all things that involve humans, nothing is ever about just one thing.

jibsaramnim,

When there was one event, I wrote it off. People are people. We all have less great days. We all poorly choose words from time to time. But a few times now something has come up related to the instance I have chosen to call my digital social home. It's still all about FOSS here.

Right?

Well, maybe not? I don't know. But all I know is, being here makes me feel like it goes against what I want my role to be in all this.

jibsaramnim,

Easy enough though, this isn't a problem. Switching instances is a fundamental part of the whole .

Except, it also isn't, not entirely. Sure, you bring your followed/following accounts with you, but you also lose your post history. But, especially if you have set up auto-deletion, maybe that's fine. It's not like I shared anything of value, it was just random pics of poodles and nerdy stuff.

So let's say it is.

But.. where do you migrate to?

jibsaramnim,

I've been contemplating embracing the whole part of the and running my own, single-user instance. Running a full setup seems like renting a truck to deliver an envelope. Is that really the best way?

There are alternatives. But now you're looking at things developed by folk accused of being way too tolerant of that kind of free speech. Or ex-Truth Social folk. Or something else.

So maybe pure is the best choice?

jibsaramnim,

How do you exist in this kind of space, without also inadvertently sponsoring, contributing to, or endorsing (willful) ignorance, hatred, bigotry, sexism, racism, and everything else that's intolerant?

Maybe we as humans were just never really meant to be social on a larger scale.

jibsaramnim,

@NakjiKiss3 Smart! I hadn't even considered that :).

Thanks to my recent business trip to the US I was able to visit a decidedly comics-barren Newbury Comics store. I stumbled upon Beirut’s Gulag Orkestar, which I’m quite happy to have found.

@alex Hi~! Thank you for the follow back!

I found Soapbox and it's looking fantastic! I've been seriously contemplating starting my own (single-user) Fedi instance, and using your front- and back-end seems like a great way to do so as it sounds like it might be a bit less heavy on requirements — not to mention quite lovely looking, of course!

I saw that there are official docker containers already, do you have plans to share an official docker-compose template to go with them?

Thanks so much!

jibsaramnim,

@openmw Fantastic work, well done!!

I am running , used only for file sync (a la Dropbox). Sadly the client app does not reliably start with my computer and is in sort of a half broken state (https://github.com/flathub/com.nextcloud.desktopclient.nextcloud/issues) so it feels clunky and definitely not "set and forget."

Not to mention that it's a proverbial truck to deliver a single package, it's way overkill for my needs.

Long story short, I'm finally giving a try.

First impressions; it works right away! But my gosh is this thing a UX pain 😅

@AlSweigart This seems to do what you ask, including not downloading images in the first place.

I am fairly certain that this will cause certain sites to end up with affected layouts, if they haven't specified expected image sizes or aspect ratios or so, but in the few sites that I tried just now it seems to work quite nicely.

(Not affiliated or anything, just found it after seeing your question about it)

    Hope this helps! :)

I had been wanting to replay and finish Donkey Kong Country 3 for a few years, ever since I last played through part of it with mom. She always loved the games in particular.

The last time we played I was jet-lagging quite a bit, so couldn't stay up very late. Even though she wanted to play more, I had to excuse myself and sleep. I always felt sorry I didn't just endure a bit more those days.

It was nice to play through and remember this past week.

Photo of the load game screen, showing one save file that is marked as being 103% completed. There are a few bonus stages and secrets in this game and if you truly "100% complete" it including those extras, the completion percentage ends up showing 103%.

Aw shucks, it seems like deploying from is only available on 's enterprise plan, somehow. That throws a minor wrench into moving away some of my repositories from GitHub.

I'll have to take a closer look at self-hosted Netlify-like alternatives. does anyone have any experience with , , , and ? Which do you prefer? Does it work with self-hosted Git, too? Please do share, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I just tried @adhami's recently released Impression app to "burn" a USB stick for something that doesn't work with Ventoy, and my gosh what a gorgeous and super simple to use application it is. Fantastic!

Go check it out if you ever need to create a bootable USB. It's worth it!

Small update on my custom project; Last week I officially factory reset the and have put it up for sale. Such a good feeling to finally be getting rid of that thing.

Last week I also got the case I had been waiting on a restock for, and I have transplanted the NAS over. Some final (SATA power) cables are expected to come in today so I can install the drives I used to have in the Synology. We're getting there!

    jibsaramnim,

Due to all the redundancy I designed into it (ie. mirrored boot SSDs, mirrored VM storage SSDs, etc.) overall power usage is a bit higher than it could have been had I gone a less redundant route. But I feel like it's still well within an acceptable range, with it on average using about 37Wh, or under 1kWh daily.

This is with my daily work now also happening within a VM running on this NAS, using "Remote Development" tools. It's been really nice.
