shipping the next batch out on Monday and still have over a dozen copies of Lurking left to go. If you pre-order Wrong Way (from your favorite bookstore, or Massive which is donating 40% to MAAP) and forward the receipt to [my.name]@ gmail, I'll send you a copy of Lurking to read in the meantime

Well that sucks. The company behind Libby/Overdrive has been acquired by the same group that gutted Toys R Us: https://karawynn.substack.com/p/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries

This is exceptional bad news for libraries, which already strain against corpo nonsense to deliver digital materials.

at least five times a day (/night) i think how much i wish that like a bird*, if you threw a blanket over me, i'd immediately fall asleep

*i'm not totally sure that birds go to sleep but they do seem to shut up when a blanket covers the cage so same thing

is there a word for it when, because you don't have all you need to complete task A, you feel too sidetracked to work on task B as well, despite having everything to complete task B.

just procrastination? ok, well, feeling it hard today.

How do we salvage generative art and its long history from the LLM-based "AI art" clogging up the internet at the moment?

I spoke with @aparrish for my latest in Filmmaker magazine.

it probably matters little in the grand scheme of things but i'm going to keep calling them Facebook. corporations aren't people, full stop, deadnaming a corporation isn't a thing, and the awful reputation their former name accrued should follow them to the new identity.
on the other hand, i think the broad historical arc of their pivot to being a "metaverse" company is already so disastrous that maybe in a few years they'll have switched back to their old name. and then i'll be calling em Meta.

@jplebreton It's is surprising to me how much more successful Facebook has been renaming via parent company than Google with Alphabet.

Seems like people want to believe there are salvageable parts of Zuckerberg's empire and a new name gives them an opportunity to mollify past criticism

had a mini-meltdown when I realized I had no backup to my old Wordpress site, which I deleted from my personal site a couple months ago (thinking I had a backup).

Which would have* meant, I lost this (and several other files) on why "any honest discussion about the future of technology has to be talking about worker protection and the decentralization of power." https://web.archive.org/web/20180925194737/http://www.joannemcneil.com/the-influence-of-technology-ica-london-digital-talk/ (from 2014)

*past tense, bc after navigating several past website designs, Wayback Machine came through

This novel published to Prodigy in the 90s does not sound good at all but it definitely would be fascinating to check out now and I hope someone helps them find it https://ask.metafilter.com/373346/Help-me-find-this-Prodigy-serial-novel

It's terrifying me how swiftly OpenAI entered public consciousness, and how much it reminds me of Google and Facebook in 2009.

Especially how Sam Altman is right now charming Washington (Democrats, especially it seems).

And that it's unfolding in a moment of financial crisis/uncertainty (in 2009, it was GFC; now it's a post-covid world of people terrified the floor will fall out under them)

jomc,
@jomc@friend.camp avatar

Also, it worries me that dissent, and fears about the harms of AI aren't recognized as broad and galvanizing but more as niche infighting (from ex-Google employees, eg).

In 2008, if there had been a sense that people concerned about Facebook and privacy aren't just like coders who donate to EFF, maybe we might have gone somewhere with regulating it.
