The other day I watched Leave the World Behind and while the general concept of the film was fine I guess and the cast was generally talented there were all these weird Boomer Lib moments in the construction of the characters that made it really alienating to anyone who's not, you know, a boomer lib

Then I go on to Wikipedia and I see that Obama personally gave feedback to the screenwriter, telling them how to make the characters more sympathetic

One of the greatest own goals in the history of cinema

"The world’s solution to safety and security, for Jews and for others, continues to be inextricably linked to the nation-state and its sovereignty — to militarized borders and an obsession with demography. As modern history has shown, such an idea always has the potential for exclusionary politics and mass violence. Perhaps most damaging of all is how such a solution propagates a diminished understanding of safety: It is the state that needs defending, not people. It is the state that holds sovereignty, not people. This logically leads to policies that label certain elements of society acceptable losses in times of conflict — sacrifices in the name of the state. And it facilitates an essentialist view of the world that cannot include the history of human migration and leaves no room for the fluidity of identity."

In Mexico, the biggest transphobic ideologue is a woman named Laura Lecuona. We didn't interview her. We glitterbombed her. Then we glitterbombed her again. We exposed her when allied cis journalists infiltrated her private talks, not by asking for her side. We got her talk at the Guadalajara International Bookfair cancelled, then got Siglo XXI to cancel her book altogether. And despite a drastically higher level of physical violence faced by trans people than the US, we aren't facing the legislation you all are facing. So far, we've managed to stop it. Take some notes

If you grew up evangelical, deconstructing what they taught you about women, gays and Jews is the easy part. Your real task is to deconstruct your tendency to literalism and your comfort with relations of dominance and submission, because you'll bring that into whatever progressive space you try to occupy afterwards

People Funny Boy - David Katz

An excellent biography of Lee "Scratch" Perry, although I have to admit that I was only really that interested in the first two thirds of it. It's always a problem with musician biographies where they'll have to spend chapter after chapter on their post-peak period, but with Scratch in particular I find the post-Black Ark period to be very sad, full of foreign producers exploiting him for novelty value and neurotypical white hipsters gawking at the neurodivergent black man. The time I saw him with Mad Professor about ten years ago, it was almost embarassing - there was nothing left of the genius that had created Double Seven and Super Ape, just a spectacle of weirdness trotted out to make money for some concert promoter

That aside, it is an exhaustively researched book and I learned a lot from it, so it's worth reading for anyone who's a fan of Scratch in any of his periods. It's also astonishing how many albums he recorded at the Ark that never saw the light of day - and some have come out since this book was written, but some haven't, such as a second album he did with Junior Murvin?? It seems that'd a holy grail for any reissue label, have the tapes been completely lost? Also interested in the second album he did with George Faith that apparently was all original compositions, since I love the sound of Super Eight but it's not my favorite just because it's all covers

I also with there were more books about this on reggae in general, with this level of research and detail - basically what's available is an entire library on Marley, a couple books on figures like Scratch that are popular with hipsters...but then it peters out really quickly. There's no books on King Tubby, none on Leslie Kong, none on Keith Hudson, I'd love to read one on Joe Gibbs because I think I like him as a producer more than Scratch, but I guess the Gibbs story doesn't make for as attractive an elevator pitch because it's less dramatic. And for the dancehall era, it's basically all shudder books by anthropologists.

I finally finished reading Bad Habit by @velvetmolotov which comes out in English this May

My wife picked it up in Spain the other month, and read it on the plane back home, crying the entire time

It took me longer to read it, because I kept having to put it down, because it made me cry every couple of chapters

It's one of the best novels of the new wave of trans literature, on the level of Detransition, Baby or Bad Girls, and probably the best novel of the closet. You're a fool if you miss it

Minor Detail - Adania Shibli

Like a lot of people, I discovered this novel after the scandal at the Frankfurt Bookfair this year, but it's so good that it's a shame to reduce its appeal to "read this to piss off racist Germans"

The prose is incandescent, and the novel's structure, divided into two parts where the second functions as a commentary on the first, is very much my jam. It's so good on a literary level that it can't simply be reduced to mere protest literature, but also depoliticizing it from its condition as a tale of the Nakba and its status as an open wound and a continuing process would be equally unjust, but so it goes with the art made by oppressed peoples

It's very short and can be read in a day or two, although sometimes its intensity makes it hard to read too much of it at once. The only weakness I'd say is the ending, which I feel resolves it too neatly, but can't really say much there without providing spoilers

I was absolutely convinced that "the British Navy is firing all its Chinese laundrymen because it's afraid they might be PRC spies and instead of not having any racialized subaltern class doing their laundry, decided to replace them with Nepalese laundrymen" had to be fake news because that was too racist even for the British but no, it seems to be real
