It's 2023 and my German internet provider (DTAG) still forces a change of public IP (v4 and v6) address every 24 hours ATM for me, making sure I cannot run my own services reliably from my server at home.

UPDATE: Changed the wording to reflect my individual problems, as it seems others do not have these effects. Still: you cannot get a dedicated IPv4 address or IPv6 range as a home user/domestic customer.

Stuff like this on an almost daily basis:

Current "AI" like is a mechanised version of the Infinite Monkey Theorem, that states that an infinite amount of monkeys and typewriters might ultimately produce the full work of Shakespeare. But definitely not any form of intelligence, IMHO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theorem

The same grifters that tried to sell are now busy selling "AI" stuff. Le sigh.

Put a $5000/per lbs Risk Tax on guns and accessories for guns like magazine holders and a $25 risk tax on every single bullet sold. Let the market decide ;)

If “AI” needs human prompt engineering to get closer to good results, doesn’t that just mean that “” is not very smart to begin with?

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

It’s also a perfect excuse to hide he fact that “AI” as in current (Large Language Models) are in reality just mechanical word stringers and not even close to any form of intelligence. But by framing it this way you can blame the human prompt engineer for being not smart enough to ask the right questions of The Glorious . Kind of evil, when you think about it …

The command I use daily to find and block probing and spam bots on my mailserver (postfix/dovecot on RHEL):

journalctl --since "24 hours ago" -o cat -l SYSLOG_FACILITY=2 | grep -E "UGFzc3dvcmQ6|not resolve|reject" | egrep -o '([0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3})' | sort | uniq

It finds bots brute forcing login attempts, those that show up with a fake hostname or that are rejected for other valid reasons.

99% of such bots come in via IPv4 addresses, so I just ignore IPv6 ATM.

If you want to read more on how I use these DNS checks in my postfix config, scroll down to the "keep connections clean" part of https://jan.wildeboer.net/2022/08/Email-1-Postfix-2022/ part of my little series on how to run your own e-mail server.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

Doing all these DNS lookups is frowned upon by admins of big e-mail servers, as they are quite expensive. They use other checks that avoid network traffic and latency for obvious reasons.

But for small e-mail servers like mine, it is a very effective way to reduce the impact of spambots and keep my mailserver happy. Did I mention I don't use SpamAssassin or stuff like that? Because with these DNS checks, spam is already reduced to almost zero. Nice :)

If you wonder - "UGFzc3dvcmQ6" is base64 encoded "Password:" ;) It shows login attempts that made it past the TLS negotiations and are now trying to randomly check user/password combinations to get access to my mailserver.

And the usual disclaimer for the "yes, but" crowd, eagerly waiting to punch holes in my solution: I am not really an expert on all the nuts and bolts of SMTP/IMAP. But I do have a bit of a talent to find patterns in log files, based on a lot of experience. I share my findings in the hope that others also want to give running a mail-server a try so we can decentralise e-mail — the way it is supposed to be :)

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

"Der Markt regelt" führt zu CO2 Zertifikaten. Damit kann man sich einfach freikaufen. Und die Zusatzkosten auf die Kunden abwälzen. Und damit auch noch spekulieren und noch mehr Geld verdienen. "Der Markt regelt" soll Reiche reicher machen und wir alle sollen dafür bezahlen. Le Sigh.

New law proposal: If you use "AI" and do not add a disclaimer to the work produced (something like "This text/picture/soundfile/video was created partly/mostly/completely by using "AI" tools) before sharing/sending/publishing the result, that should be treated as subterfuge/deceit and punished with a high fine at the very least.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

All science journals should make this a standard clause in the submission rules. If you use "AI" without declaring you did, your work will be rejected and you will be barred from new submissions for at least 6 months.

We shouldn't be governed by old white men. Says me. An old white man. We need to empower, trust and support the younger generations. They will shape the world they want to live in. While us white old men are often focusing on simply keeping things the way they are and hoping for the best.
