Dear web developers & designers,

Now that you know what’s coming in Safari 17 — as well as what shipped in Safari 16.2-16.5 — what do you need in WebKit next?

Which web technology that’s already been standardized is highest priority? What brand new idea do you need invented?

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@jensimmons WKWebView could really use a way to mark custom URL schemes as secure (the way only https is right now).

I just remembered the time on a previous project where one of the DBAs ran a standard security patch on our Oracle fleet, and then at the end of year audit ritual, we got a bill for $350K because the update changed the compression scheme on backups from bzip to LZO, thereby triggering an Enterprise-licensed feature on every Standard edition box in our org. 7+ years later, and I'm still salty about that.

Anyone got a good recommendation for a standing desk VESA mount, that's not a $250+ Ergotron LX Tall? The Amazon Basics Ergotron white label that I was planning to use is pretty great but needs to go up 6-9" more for proper positioning.

@paul @gruber it’s strange how niche these things still are. Thunderbolt is everywhere but nobody needs a long cable? I wonder how many of the optical ones Corning has sold, like ever. Single digit thousands? Perhaps if they added power delivery…

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@janl yeah, but plenty of hybrid cables like that exist 🤓 My Samsung TV hooks up to its tuner box with one, does something like 40 Gbps over a 15-meter fiber optic cable that also carries all the power the TV needs (so 100-200W?)

The more I think about Apple Vision Pro this week, the more I'm starting to realize I want to see it go up in price, not down. I want to see the higher-end model with an M2 Pro or Max chip, with 64GB of RAM and 1TB+ internal storage. Give it on-board macOS virtualization, too. I don't think enough people have given this thought, but I think there is huge potential for higher-end models, especially as pro apps find their way onto the platform — the ‘Mac Pro’ of spatial computing

@stroughtonsmith the headset itself could also be much cooler, lighter and simpler if you moved the CPUs away from the face (and you’d probably have to if you significantly upgraded them)

First day of summer vacation. Taking an EV on a 640km trip into another country.

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@janl (it’s bad enough that they’ve banned the Plugsharing RFID tags on some networks because they want to make sure that you see the outrageous price in the app before you charge)

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@janl what’s the best Danish charging network? Will be there in three weeks or so

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@janl here in Finland it looks like Plugsurfing roaming prices can be 2-3x the “native” price of the local provider, so it might be worth looking into those apps. Then again we’ll only be there for a week or so, charging at Plugsurfing prices probably won’t break the bank…

What's the recommended drive manufacturer for NAS these days?

I was using WD Red but I know they've been mired in controversy lately.

(Got a five bay of 4TB drives that will need upsizing).

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@janl @schwa 15TB SSDs have apparently broken under $1300 now so it’s not that far off. (I have a total of 20 Exos X16s in NASes and none have failed, but seems late in the game to recommend them)

Was looking at the Telo MT1 and it occurs to me that down the road, EVs will just be easier to make, by orders of magnitude, than ICE cars. And that explains how these startups can possibly succeed?

karppinen,
@karppinen@mastodon.online avatar

@osma my understanding was that EVs are simpler to design for collision safety too, but yeah, the barriers to entry getting smaller don’t really have to be about EVs per se (fewer ICE startups for other reasons)
