@jwildeboer yes, but I'm in the process of migrating to Fastmail (slowly)

my feed is very heavy on intense lectures today and it’s like…the thing about hammering away on network ethics (even when you are right) vs making it ridiculously easy for people to join and find their friends and follow people posting dumb jokes is that only one of those things meets the big human need for connection and play (even when the easy fun path might lead directly off a cliff)

it’s nice to be right, but making ethically better things way more effective is a much stronger move 🤷🏻

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@kissane maybe it'd be worth exploring separating the social graph from the social network? That way, discovery can still happen naturally (to the extent that it currently does on mastodon), but finding people you know that you want to connect with exists above the realm of social media?

Oh, wait, blogs. I've just "invented" personal blog sites. With contact-the-author sections that list their email and fedi accounts and non-fedi accounts.

"How's that currently working for you?"
"Poorly."

A bit bold of facebook to keep sending "missed notification" emails after they terminate your account (with cause, for being an obvious fake, which I only created because accessing FB Marketplace without an account is slightly more ass than with an account).

kboyd,

@mijustin Dunno about decently priced, but I'm liking my Dell U2723QE. 27" widescreen, with good colour calibration out of the box (which is important for photo processing, I've been told). And the USB-C support is very nice.

I haven't tried BS, and I don't currently plan to. I have concerns that will require, much like the Twitter takeover, an observation period to see if my concerns are adequately addressed.

What I'll be looking for:

  1. Effective moderation tools, both for admins and for users themselves

  2. A culture around content moderation that unequivocally protects vulnerable populations

  3. True decentralization with an open source, self-hostable server

  4. Nice to have: ActivityPub integration

I really dislike the button reading "Publish" when sending a DM on Mastodon.

It always makes me question if I'm really sending a DM or if I'm accidentally "publishing" something on my regular feed.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@fribbledom this is where the word "Post" would make sense, because it's like you're nailing a note to a fencepost and waiting for them to pass by.

Um, I mean, mailing them a letter. Yeah, that's the ticket.

It would be nice if @signalapp could hook into ActivityPub somehow to provide robust secure DMs (ideally without revealing phone numbers unless desired to do so).

kboyd,

@evert I strongly dislike working with oauth2 (and REST, a bit, but this isn't really about that). I'd go so far as to say that it's sucked some of the joy out of web dev for me. And it's not like I don't know how to use it - I just find it cumbersome and annoying, all the time. It's exhausting. The only saving grace is that once it's working, it usually stays that way.

+1 for your oauth3 suggestions. Although I'm not sure it would alleviate all of my annoyances, it would be a good start.

Wheezing with laughter at Zuckerberg's inevitable pivot to AI and his attempt to pretend that's not what he's doing. "We have not stopped focusing on the metaverse, we were focused on AI the whole time" is literally what he's trying to go with, somebody come get your boy.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@seldo what amuses me is that he'd probably be better off sticking to the original meta plan & making a big stink about the perils of AI, and then down the road revealing real-time ML-based features for Meta that are Definitely Not AI In Any Way.

But instead he's going to chase the AI dragon* and send everything down the drain.

I'm OK with that.
