From the "university" of Austin:

"This year's Forbidden Courses entail advanced inquiries into science & religion, race, gender politics, Anglo-American grand strategy, our moral judgements, debates within conservatism, and the state of evolutionary biology."

What's written on the black board in this promotional photo-- is this forbidden knowledge?

"Modern narratives of moral change are an excuse for failure."

"non black people can not say the n-word"

"sex is binary"

> "Modern narratives of moral change are an excuse for failure."

What does this even mean?

@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@futurebird You're almost certainly right.

It still feels like reading something from another universe, though — even after correcting for the moralistic worldviews that the right is so in love with.

@ben Is there a version of this with a map of the Confederacy superimposed?

Here’s a thought experiment: If you had a small group of skilled mobile, desktop, server, and web front-end engineers who have access to time and money, and are eager to MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE USING THEIR SKILLS (and not just spin up yet another exploitive startup) what would YOU have them do?

Be specific.

Assume cost is no object.

It’s time to stop bellyaching about how bad tech is, and start brainstorming about what good it can do.

Please repost for exposure.

EDIT: Let’s add hardware, industrial design, and UX engineers in the mix as well, to round things out.

@drahardja Reminded partially by https://tweesecake.social/@devinprater/110389756583410815: develop a truly medium-agnostic UI — one that, as much as possible, works out of the box with only an audio channel, only a visual channel, and only a tactile channel, with minimal effort on the part of the developer building the app that uses the framework.

The tactile side would likely require hardware knowledge and resources as well, but I'm assuming some flexibility in what sorts of tech people you can rope in.

No need to worry. My suggestion is to begin with a straightforward and user-friendly Linux distribution. Once you become comfortable with the command-line interface and other functions, you can switch to a more advanced distribution. Personally, I utilize the Ubuntu LTS desktop as my primary operating system for completing my tasks. As I am occupied with work, I don't have much time to experiment with the latest technologies. However, your experience may differ.

@nixCraft FWIW, I switched to Arch mainly because I found I was going to the Arch wiki so often to fix problems with Sabayon.

Now that I use Arch, I rarely have to go to the Arch wiki at all, because it just works.

Reminder that in Klingon, cha means “torpedoes”. Käärijä is issuing battle commands at a furious pace.

Morning mood: the CNN situation makes it pretty clear that as Canadians, we're going to have to think about what it is going to be like living next to a brutal dictatorship with the disappearance of the rule of law, complete compromise of the courts, and probably mass executions, prison camps, and a flood of refugees coming to our border. It seems inevitable that this is where America is headed. We are witnessing the death of democracy in real-time. The media is once again going to aid and abet it's destruction in a race for ratings

As you might guess, I'm in a pretty pissy mood this morning.

@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@jimcarroll You're not the only one thinking that way.

I grew up in the US, but moved to Europe 7 years ago. Every once in a while I wonder whether that was a boneheaded move (for a variety of reasons), and then I see something else about how things are actually going in the US and find myself wishing I could make the citizenship paperwork move faster.

I still visit the US a couple of times a year, but will probably never live there again.

DeepMind posted a paper on training simulated robots to play soccer (& translating that to the real world).

The part I liked best: they had to penalize the robots for falling down, or they would "learn to roll on the ground towards the ball to knock it into the goal, rather than walking and kicking."

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@janellecshane I wonder if rolling is a strategy that human players could adopt (unless it’s against the rules and I just don’t know enough about soccer to realize that).

Automatically disqualify Android users? WTF? Android has a global market share of 72%. Even in the USA, it has around 44% market share. This must be just a joke. Otherwise, you are missing out on good talent by following a cult.

The concept of car ownership is done. I won’t pay $60 per month to lift a software restrictions from a car (on top of paying $$$ for the car, it’s fuel and repairs). That money easily covers my typical car sharing expenses every month 🤯

@vsaw @web This whole idea of "we're going to sell you the thing but not actually let you use it unless you keep paying us" is ridiculous and has to stop.

I personally don't need a car and think fewer people should own a car, but it will come for every basic item if we're not careful.

So as an english speaker, I've learned the to quickly remember left and right, you look at the hand that makes a L between thumb and fingers with the knuckles facing you.

What's the same for ? My best guess is, it's the hard where the fingers make a rough E shape when the fingers are pointing to the other hand.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@thisismissem The language-agnostic method is to find a mole or other notable feature on one of your limbs (but not the corresponding one on the other side), and memorize the side that goes with it. That’s what worked for me as a kid.

If interfaces have default methods now then what the heck is the point of abstract classes?? JAVA is making me crazy. I don’t use these higher levels of abstraction nearly enough so when they change it’s a crisis conceptually.

kechpaja,
@kechpaja@social.kechpaja.com avatar

@futurebird Java is sort of a kitchen sink language, although not anywheres near as much as C++.

Is this coming up in a context where you absolutely must use Java? Or do you just need to call Java libraries (which would be doable from another JVM language)?
