I'd like back all the hours I've spent over the years trying figure out the correct incantations of quotation marks and escape characters to get computers to do what I want with some text.

@sue not sure what you’re doing, but LLMs are pretty good at this stuff. if i know i have a syntax error but can’t spot it, i dump it into an LLM and it shoots back the answer almost 100% of the time

Impressively high usage numbers for ChatGPT in the USA according to this Reuters Institute survey: 7% of the 2,012 survey participants in the USA reported using it daily, another 11% said weekly - so 18%, nearly 1/5 are using it at least once a week! https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/what-does-public-six-countries-think-generative-ai-news#header--3

(I've seen several headlines about this survey that suggest it as proof that ChatGPT usage isn't living up to the hype, which isn't my interpretation of these numbers at all)

they say #northcarolina is a purple state, but it’s more like a bimodal “flaming red” AND “ice blue” state depending on where you are

imo the blue parts feel far more liberal than any part of #seattle. i debate if that’s because the south is just more superficial about everything, or if people in seattle simply don’t talk to literally anyone so we don’t actually know if it’s a liberal or conservative area

when learning about computers, i can’t imagine how people do it without “hacking” — tearing things down to the most basic components, building them back up in quirky ways

i had a CS prof that demanded everyone use Notepad.exe as their exclusive code editor and i kinda dig that mindset. you don’t need to efficiently write code when you’re learning

i wonder if we’re getting so advanced that you can’t learn through hacking. but i don’t think that’s true. sure, you no longer have to go to the lowest levels FIRST, but you still absolutely can. but you can also put it off until later after you’ve groked other concepts. that’s powerful, imo

but yeah, in the age of AI you can learn algorithms & DS without mastering the details of programming first. i have a hard time with that, but i know i’m biased by how i learned. ofc there’s alternate paths to mastery

this is great! the last few years we’ve finally internalized how important bacteria is to our health, so broad spectrum antibiotics that wipe out all bacteria are sometimes more harmful than we wish.

this new antibiotic targets only Gram-negative pathogens, which commonly infect hospital patients and have frequently become resistant to antibiotics. This could save a lot of lives

Google apparently accidentally posted docs on the roughly 14,000 features that go into search results

Lots of somewhat surprising/interesting ones in there

For example, author names of blog posts, articles, etc. are special; it seems to have different tags for site types (personal, work, etc); lots and lots of stuff for filtering abusive/sexual/violent material

it’s funny that “legalistic” means a very strict interpretation, but in 2024 general society has become so saturated with computers and technology that actual legal interpretation seems vague, muddy and subjective

those days were wild. people would say, “what if we…” and then outline the plot to a black mirror episode

one of the side effects of working in software is you most often observe software in a failing state, so replacing fundamental societal structures with code seems like a really bad idea

This is super interesting. It's just a conversation with a research about a study on LLM actual potential. It's only a 13min video, but basically the study shows that most likely AI can't have infinite growth because there is a limited amount of data available to train on.

There's a finite amount of data & no matter how they mathed it out, it's not a J-curve or linear growth of AI's capabilities, but an S-curve every time.

Another example of how Apple is getting left behind in the AI wars is that both Windows PCs and Chromebooks are going to have AI assistants, generative AI image tools and writing tools.

Apple will probably just announce the thinnest MacBook ever. Again.

@carnage4life i’m a huge advocate for LLMs, but i’m not sure Windows and Google are good examples for how to deploy them. imo Apple has been quietly killing it in terms of downsizing models, and I have a feeling they’re going to suddenly announce something soon that’s a gigantic UX improvement, and leaves everyone in the dust
