The NY Times report "The Unpunished: How Extremists Took Over Israel" is quite long, but Ali Velshi does a good job of summarizing it and explaining its importance in about 8 min here. (You can skip the interview with the reporter at the end - not much is added.)

I've written a guide for people who want to draft papers in and then export to Microsoft with "live" citations. That is, the final document will look like a document that was written in Word with Zotero from the beginning, allowing you to edit the citations and generate a bibliography before submitting to a journal.

Read an article today which suggests that trauma backstories are a recent trend in TV story writing, but the thing is that this has been a staple of film screenplay writing for decades. It is closely connected to the way people are taught to write screenplays and the kinds of stories studios expect to produce. Central to these is the notion of "the hero's journey" in which the main character must overcome his (or, less often, her) inner demons before they can achieve their goals.

kerim,
@kerim@zirk.us avatar

Trauma is an easy way to manufacture such inner demons for characters, and the language of pop psychology (especially that of recovery programs) is an easy way to talk about this inner struggle. I have always been bored and put off by such narratives, but they have been so ubiquitous, and for so long, that I find it strange that it is suddenly being treated as if it is a trend?

Siddhartha Deb, in the NY Times:

"This is not sustainable, even if it seems likely that Mr. Modi will ride to a third victory in national parliamentary elections that begin Friday . . .

Perhaps even the prime minister and his party can sense this. Their crackdowns on opposition political leaders, manipulation of electoral rolls and voting machines and freezing of campaign funds for opposition parties are not the actions of a confident group."

"You don’t have to like anti-Israel language or activism to be worried about congressional demands to suppress it. These hearings are highly unusual; it’s hard to think of a time since the anti-Communist House Un-American Activities Committee when Congress has made such an effort to investigate disfavored ideologies in academe."

This is fascinating on so many levels.

TSMC employee newborns in make up 1.8% of country's 2023 total

https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202403290012 (1/4) 🧵

kerim,
@kerim@zirk.us avatar

One is just the sheer size of TSMC's impact on Taiwan. TSMC also consumed 4.9% of Taiwan's electricity in 2019, and 3.4% of total industrial water usage in that year as well. And TSMC "together with the rest of the semiconductor industry constitutes about 15 percent of Taiwan's GDP." Given all that, it shouldn't be too surprising that they also produce nearly 2% of the babies in Taiwan. (2/4) 🧵

Another is the way that "TSMC Child Care Benefit Program 2.0" is more ambitious than anything done by the government. (Read the article for all the details.) (3/4) 🧵

The current state of the US Post Office makes me sad. During this stay, not a single package delivered via USPS "Priority Mail" was delivered on time. Most were several days late.

Trump once admitted that he deliberately starved the US Post Office of cash in order to delay mail-in ballots, and yet here we are...

A group of Jewish writers drafted this letter after seeing an old argument gain new power: the claim that critiquing Israel is antisemitic.

“We refuse the false choice between Jewish safety and Palestinian freedom; between Jewish identity and ending the oppression of Palestinians. In fact, we believe the rights of Jews and Palestinians go hand-in-hand. The safety of each people depends on the other’s.”

Then go to the Law for Palestine database and look at some of the over 500 quotes they've collected from Israeli politicians and military leaders expressing genocidal intent.
