Middle-aged queer trans Chicagoan. Fond of the ancient world (casually), board games (medium-crunchy), feminist SF/F novels, etc..

Crossposts to poison-sumac on Bluesky; formerly @listel[l]ian on the bird site. Follow requests welcome; don't hassle me if I decline.

I write code for work and therefore have zero brain remaining for hobby programming, but a long time ago I did grad school in type theory.

graphics research lifehack: you can cut out a ton of paywall scams and inscrutable academic wankery by excluding "we present" from your searches

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva Wait does - seriously not work in Google search anymore??

I was just thinking about trying out this Kagi thing, and then I saw that they're So Excited about AI, but now I don't even know what to do. Resigning myself to "Bing with a condom" just doesn't feel great, especially because it's not like they'll be better than "Google with a condom" about anything, and it's not like the condom-providers can actually help with quality?

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@fl0_id @aeva This is reminding me a bit of searx, which seemed cool, but even aside from the "you're just getting an anonymized amalgam of existing search from various places, with all its problems" aspect, any given searx instance would either become unresponsive or get blacklisted by various actual search providers like half the time, and I don't have the patience to run my own instance of anything.

Which I guess is to ask, does stract improve on any of this? What's it using under the hood?

Oh… so you describe yourself as a "computer toucher"? How quaint… personally I command my computer from afar with my immense psychic abilities… turns over three playing cards on a table, they show a red diamond, a blue circle and a long error message concerning "dbus"

@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@phildini I've seen posts about this on Tumblr, and it's more than just "oh no, the electricity is so cheap we have to give it away". I don't remember the technical details (if something crosses my dash again I'll update this with a link), but running a power grid is complicated, and extra electricity has to go somewhere.

(Existing grids don't have much battery storage or similar, because you don't need that with fossil fuels, where plant operators control how much electricity they generate.)

Looking into how to set up a bluesky server.

Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc They also love phrasing things in such a way to perpetuate the idea that Mastodon/etc. instances are completely separate and don't talk to each other.

Like. They never come out and say it. But if you read Bluesky stuff like this and already believe that, it will absolutely reinforce said belief.

you ever think about manual breathing

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva I'm not immune to the manual breathing effect, but my defiant side means that my automatic reaction to things like this is to breathe some other way (unless I have a reason to follow the instructions).

Which is not something I'm usually thankful for, so, thanks for giving me the opportunity to feel differently about it!

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva Nah, I do sympathic yawns the same as anyone.

I think the breathing thing is a combination of having been a choir/band kid and now being an adult who chafes at a lot of hippie stuff.

Important information about anime and video game crucifixions, for whoever here is a Xenogears fan and doesn't follow me on Tumblr: https://prokopetz.tumblr.com/post/746397104245719040/ultraman-ace-1972-episode-14-the-five-stars

TL;DR: turns out they're mostly all Ultraman references, because Ultraman is the Narnia of old, long-running Japanese media??

dear lazy web: I am looking to buy a laptop. I'd like something smol, sturdy, decent keyboard, doesn't look like an apple product, has a strong CPU, a bunch of ram (ideally replaceable), and an ok GPU (Intel is fine). I'd like to be able to run Linux on it. Some nice-to-haves are a touch screen, the ability to fold the screen around and use it like a tablet, and being relatively easy to repair.

What's good these days?

EDIT: I just put in an order for a Framework 13

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva I'm really excited to hear what you think of the Framework! It's what I've been thinking of getting next, and I'm thinking you're probably more demanding of computers than I am, so if it's good enough for you it'll definitely be good enough for me.

Okay, so testing out this RISC-V single board computer with onboard FPGA, I've successfully

  • Booted
  • Verified I can boot into HSS bootloader/recovery with serial connection
  • Connected to Ethernet, can ssh in and perform basic tasks like running apt and renaming the device to "Cabbit"
  • Downloaded the proprietary tools for making FPGA bitstreams and obtained a license key

So, the next step is straightforward:

  • Complete Super Mario 2 on original SNES hardware and time how long it takes me

@cstross These (or something very similar to them; I don't remember where I got them) are my regular hair clips during the parts of the year where I'm not wearing a hat all the time!

I honestly don't think I've ever used the tool functionality, but I like that I could. Also they're good hair clips and don't fall out easily like cheap drug store ones tend to.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Seeking reports from anyone who's successfully gotten a cab or rideshare on the south side of Chicago-- especially South Shore or Pullman. How long was the wait? Were there a lot of cancellations? What app/company did you use?

(I'm trying to help someone out who's new to town, lives in South Shore / works in Pullman, has had car trouble, and is overwhelmed trying to make backup plans given everything they've heard about people refusing to provide service to Black neighborhoods.)

Two requests for recommendations from the Fediverse:

  • binders, compression bras, or heavy-duty sports bras for larger people that don't "feel like a traditional bra" (e.g., not "all the straps and such")

  • tricks or gadgets for when chronic pain leads to hand numbness but you still need to open cans, apply Icy Hot patches, etc.

(As you may have guessed if you know queers, these are in fact for the same person.)

Every time I've had to log into something through google for like the last month or so there's been this weird banner threatening that google is preparing to make their login page worse. It's so funny. I wonder if they've got a KPI for how much dread they fill their users with.

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva @mcc When I worked there it seemed like the place was full of random engineers yelling about how various changes to various user experiences were bad ideas, and for all their internal docs and G+ posts they had maybe even less of an impact than Vonnegut's famous custard pie dropped from a stepladder.

In “A Goofy Movie" (1995), most male-coded characters wear gloves, and most female-coded characters do not.

From this, might we conclude that the world of “A Goofy Movie" is actually a strict religious hegemony, or the decaying remains of a previous such hegemony?

Furthermore, what are we to make of the fact that this groundbreaking film fundamentally answered the question of how dogs would wear not only gloves, but pants?

What can we learn from this insight into canine civilization?

klara,
@klara@wandering.shop avatar

@phildini Oh jeez, is A Goofy Movie set during the breakdown of the Radch, as seen through the local colony's gender tropes and their unconventional understanding of Radchaai culture??

In addition to the letter E, I am now making use of the letter P. This is my third time attempting to use P, and I hope that this one actually takes. I am starting with one hundred so I expect I initially won't be able to tell the difference at all.
