recommendations for portable co2 meters/monitors?

Every year, around this time, I get miserable and low. I start to wonder why I bother doing the hard yards, breaking new ground, trying to change the world. What’s even the point? does anyone notice? does anyone even care?

And eventually I realise it’s August and Melbourne winter is not my friend, and although it doesn’t fix it, the realisation helps me claw my way through to Spring.

So if you’re in the frozen south and also struggling - hang in there! It gets better!!

@thorne have a sad lamp on my desk, have not been using it first thing in the morning! how long do you run it for each morning?

lindamciver,
@lindamciver@aus.social avatar

@mattcen @thorne escaping sounds a really good move!! and yes, I’d love the details of the device too, please, Thorne. I’ve just bought a much better light for my office, which I hope will help, but a sunrise wakeup sounds like a great idea

What kind of science do you wish people understood? What science do people need to understand in order to make the world a better place?

Obviously Epidemiology & the spread of infectious diseases, ecology, and climate science are right up there.

I'd add food science - by which I mean how food cooks, how/when bacteria grow in food, what happens to different foods when you refrigerate or freeze them, or expose them to oxygen, and nutritrion,

as well as health - what does your body need to be healthy, how do you know when you're getting sick, what do we know and not know about how the body works.

I'd add the psychology of marketing, of sleep, and of learning.

Also the physics of motion - stopping distance, friction, water, etc.

And the nature of science itself.

What would you have in that list?

Other than cutting my finger off, do people have good ways to remove a tight fitting ring?

lindamciver,
@lindamciver@aus.social avatar

@jonoabroad the string trick plus soap worked for me. It scraped enough to hurt, but no bleeding. Fair amount of effort required for mine, which was so trapped by the pad of my finger it was actually reshaping the finger! Don’t be discouraged if it needs a bit of wrangling, even with string & soap.

@lindamciver@aus.social avatar

@jonoabroad might be worth asking. some places will just tape over it.

"A good graph just explains what's going on. Don't think that data is all about maths, and how technical and how wonderful your maths can be. Sometimes it's just 'oh, look, I averaged these things and showed that actually all the movement that seems to have been happening over the last 12 months just turns out to be a lot of noise.'"

It always makes me sad to hear the praise and love people get after they die. “You’re amazing. Your work is so important. We love you. You matter to me.” We need to say these things more while people are alive.

this is bloody monstrous. This is what happens when you make gender a political battleground. Kids get ground up and spat out as collateral damage. The medical consensus is that this girl needs gender affirming care. Everyone else should butt tf out.

Hey folks, is there such a thing as a patient advocate?

Have someone who is having a rough time post surgery and we don't think is getting the level of care any reasonable person would expect

lindamciver,
@lindamciver@aus.social avatar

@jonoabroad a lot of hospitals have a specific contact person for this sort of thing these days. I got a pamphlet before my surgery detailing who to talk to. The hospital website should make it available too (though it's almost certainly not as easy to find as it should be).

so many of us now wear and carry devices that automagically measure a vast array of things about our bodies. Imagine if doctors were trained to use that data for diagnostic purposes…

We suffer from a combination of shiny toy fever and an entirely hallucinatory dream that the tech industry is operating for our benefit, rather than to extract ever increasing rivers of money (and power) from us regardless of ethics, environment, or compassion. In the face of countless examples of sociopathic behaviour, our attitude towards tech remains bizarrely positive.

ok, so from my explorations, with the kind help of several generous android users, it appears that downloading your own health data is a bitch regardless of platform. What’s your take on why they don’t want us to be able to access our data freely?
