While I was working on compiling a PDF proof of some writing drafts this morning, I realized MS had "enhanced" office with AI. Without asking, without consent.

I was able to do the registry edit solution and now the AI.exe task does not appear to be loading when I go in to work on a draft.

https://thegeekpage.com/how-to-disable-the-artificial-intelligence-ai-host-feature/

I want to again remind people that AI is an equal opportunity robber. Your rough drafts? Private journals? AI don't care and will gobble that up.

@amoroso Great article! I find the definition of O/S mechanics a little narrow, but a fitting tribute to the life and times of Gary Kindall. There's also a 28 minute documentary to watch here: https://youtu.be/Tdj8gh9GPc4?si=jqIAktGyLyGVpeV5

@amunizp we are all struggling with linguistic barriers in the team so no problem 😅 we were heads down trying to get somewhere in the code, and are just starting to get the pitch down, if you want and have a few minutes I can invite you to a call

@amunizp yes! Aware of Limesurvey and you're right, we want to make it seamless for the researcher. And reduce costs so the project actually has a chance of getting support.

loleg,
@loleg@fosstodon.org avatar

@amunizp we are also keen to practice our Python, and learning a new framework is fun at a Hackathon :) but we will put that into the document and encourage the project owner to "shop around" before committing.

@amunizp it was great to have you, and I'd love to give you credit, just mention your name in the slides if thats okay?

NASA is sending a software update to the Voyager 2 spacecraft today!

The patch contains logic to auto-recover from glitches similar to one in May 2022, when the AACS system on Voyager 1 started sending garbled data. The root cause was not fully diagnosed. The patch will be activated/tested on Oct 28. Voyager 1 will be next.

Data will be sent at 16 bps with a 19 kW transmitter using the 70-m dish at @canberradsn.
Distance: 20 billion km; 18:40 light hours

Many companies thought about it, Shopify actually did it.

> The Canadian e-commerce company has rolled out a calculator embedded in employees’ calendar app that estimates the cost of any meeting with three or more people. The tool uses average compensation data across roles and disciplines, along with meeting length and attendee count, to put a price tag on the event.

So let me get this straight, Tabnine (https://www.tabnine.com/) already has a commercial service, offers a private local model, was trained only on permissively-licensed code, and doesn’t reek of Musk. I might just have to give it a try on principle alone.

@aral how did it go? Plus, it is of Canadian university origin, and just got a big boost from Atlassian.
