Lovely children's book explaining the link between data privacy, AI, third party data collection and how that causes trouble for people deviating from the normal distribution of values:

https://www.carlsen.de/hardcover/spooki-den-geist-aufgeben-gibts-nicht/978-3-551-65521-9

Including a ghost family raising a human boy and a girl helping the family with her coding and hacking skills - she moved to Germany from California obviously.

@levampyre https://www.youtube.com/live/hDmgI269Vjw?si=Jtk9UAa7y4VGnCjw ... Might be helpful to explain the real world incentive behind a lot of time stealing apps, assuming she speaks German.

There's also lovely pixi books on data protection and related topics from BfDI for free: https://www.bfdi.bund.de/DE/Service/Publikationen/Pixi/Pixi_node.html

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

People and SEO Spam like this are ruining the internet. Fuck this shite.

image/jpeg

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@dalias @gamingonlinux likely that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Back when everyone was impressed about Google's reaction to ChatGPT and taking that as a sign that Google feared a competitor coming up with a better interface to search I kept wondering why nobody saw the much more immediate thread of LLMs used for SEO...

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@dalias @gamingonlinux what surprises me though is that this SEO approach wasn't spotted automatically and the effect throttled.

There are two problems that are coming for Mastodon of which apparently an awful lot of people are unaware. These problems are coming for Mastodon not because of anything specific to Mastodon: they come to all growing social media platforms. But for some reason most people haven't noticed them, per se.

The first problem is that scale has social effects. Most technical people know that scale has technological effects. Same thing's true on the social side, too.

🧵

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@siderea I really appreciate your thread. In particular as it is much easier to think about remedies while it's still quite as opposed to when the storm starts.

Things I would add to the list: People, trying to game the system to spread their knowledge are not only attracted by the size of the platform but also the influence people have elsewhere, think journalists or polititions active here.

been thinking about this very common git workflow and how git doesn't do much to help you ensure that if you're using this workflow:

a) you never commit to your local main branch directly
b) you regularly pull from origin/main to keep your local main branch up to date

you just need to be careful

branch protection on github/gitlab helps with this, but I don't think there's much in git itself

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@b0rk whose maintaining git these days?

Iirc it's original author wasn't and likely still isn't a huge fan of GitHub. So added features there might depend on maintainership.

For anything GitHub specific I believe there's a GitHub provided and maintained commandline tool.

I am full of stories from the past in Open Source and Free Software. And at some point I will write a book about all of that. But right now I try to focus on stories that help with solving current problems. Stories that teach a lesson you can use RightNow(tm). The fun anecdotes also have their place, but let's focus on telling stories that break the 20 year cycle of repeating the mistakes we already made but with new tools :) Because that IS a pattern I see. Package managers, anyone? ;)

mainec, (edited )
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@jwildeboer have you thought about writing these stories in pattern/ anti pattern language?

We did this for several OSS best practices to translate them to InnerSource over at the InnerSource Commons (far from exhaustive collection of patterns so far). Phrasing problem and solution when writing them greatly helped me get the learnings clear even in my own head.

Even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as during the pandemic lockdown, we wouldn't achieve our climate targets.

While individuals made huge sacrifices, the system remained. This shows that individual action will not solve climate change. We need the system to change.

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@davidho .oO(and during the pandemic even several production sites shut down for several weeks - at least in Asia and Europe, so it already was more than individual action)

Was habt ihr so? Ansprechbar mit Open Source (z.B. HAss) ist ein Muss, dimmen auch. Flackerfrei, ich bin da empfindlich. Einstellbare Farbtemperatur (zwischen kalt & warm) wär super. RGB brauch ich nicht unbedingt. Wi-Fi oder mit Hub, mir halbwegs egal.

Sharing in case this helps someone.

The last time someone in our household got Covid, we were able to keep it from spreading to anyone else. ♥️🙏🏿 This time we were not so lucky. My Covid high score streak is finally broken! Rona got me y'all!

Completely unscientific observations of how this thing looks to have beat our mitigations:

Day 0: Contagious. No symptoms. Negative tests.

Day 1: Contagious. Slight symptoms. Negative test.

Day 2: Contagious. More severe symptoms. Positive tests.

mainec,
@mainec@fromm.social avatar

@mekkaokereke thanks for sharing, that is an interesting pattern as originally, negative rapid test would have meant 'maybe positive, but not contagious for at least X hours after negative test result'
