The Alcubierre warp drive is a theoretical concept that proposes a way to achieve faster-than-light travel by distorting spacetime around a spacecraft. The idea is to create a “warp bubble” that contracts spacetime in front of the spacecraft while expanding space behind it. This effectively allows the spacecraft to ride a wave of warped spacetime and travel faster than the speed of light.

Warp drives were first conceptualized in 1957, and made famous in Star Trek.
