I took the pitch detection code from Hit The High Notes and turned it into a Hatch component, not sure I've got the pitch range or sensitivity right in this demo, but if you feel like screeching at a space ship here you go: https://mattround.hatch.one/scream-trek

@simoncox Yeah I might need to add a warning the way I did with HTHNโ€ฆ

I suspect catch-up features have been slow to arrive on Mastodon due to wariness of Algorithms, but itโ€™s the least evil way to let people read forwards in time from a saved position without feeling overwhelmed
(skimming backwards has always been a ridiculous way to read a social feed)

I got to the Big Twist in AppleTV's Sugar (it's no spoiler to say there's one, it's been clear since the trailer, right?) and... somehow they've managed to make it seem like no big deal, weirdly it hasn't fundamentally changed the show

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@simoncox some of the other possibilities might've been more interesting in how they could've tied in with the movie stuff, but I like how it's just yeah, whatever, the plot moves on (suspect there may be a second twist, will have to see if I'm right)

I'm manually indenting a client project and using emoji 'icons' in comments because it makes the coding more satisfying and might make their tech bods smile

Presenting first round of logo ideas to a new client, and just as the meeting started, I questioned whether I'd got the company name right. That's a new one on the list of overthinking anxieties

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@jonhicks I did this once, 25+ years ago... but in my defence, it was a demo site I had to create overnight for the client to show first thing in the morning, it's easy to miss the 2nd E out of Peugeot at 4am

What pattern will emerge from this union?

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@simeon @sarajw I've always wanted to do a spin-off site that's 100% daft food stuff like this but so far haven't found anyone to run it

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@sarajw @simeon (Oh those are amazing!) Not sure really, would need to be someone who wants to try a load of stuff that'll be fun & creative but may or may not lead anywhere (the vole site has made a decent chunk of money but sort of by accident). Understandably, very few people have the time & motivation to do stuff for little or no money to see what happens

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@sarajw The way I'm imagining it is either a separate domain (eg grub dot wtf) or a branded area of site with its own quirky feel (& existing food projects would perhaps get moved over), depending on tone & quantity. See whether lots of easy & fun ideas come to mind (I'm always keen for people to be lazy & do what they find easy & fun)

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@sarajw Subdomain might make sense, and it wouldn't be hard to set something up that'd give you ability to control HTML/CSS & deploy from repo without faff if you wanted to do that, while also letting me add some automated nav/cross-promotion & integrate with main site
If you email volewtf@gmail.com I can send some more info

I keep getting TrackBack spam in .
But, what's weird, is that the domains don't exist!

This is a typical one. A nonsensical and non-existent domain - R9NpK.com

I can't understand how these are submitted, nor what their goal is.

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@Edent I'm guessing they're testing to see if that then shows up on a public site, without the risk of getting the actual spam domains banned..?

I'm being a bit thick with .

Given an arbitrary URl on my blog - how can I get the query which it would execute?

If you've a mind to help - https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/425043/equivalent-of-url-to-postid-for-non-post-urls - much appreciated!

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@Edent @otto42 Could you add/modify an htaccess rewrite rule that puts the extra extension into query string, then retrieve it later to adjust output?

Don't get me wrong, this is a real problem, but any content site that doesnโ€™t cache its pages is likely to get knocked over if it publishes something popular. CMSs don't make this as easy as they should, & it's v difficult for some types of content, but once pages are cacheable it's free/cheap to cope with big traffic spikes https://news.itsfoss.com/mastodon-link-problem/

mattround,
@mattround@crispsandwi.ch avatar

@simoncox CloudFlare doesn't cache HTML by default & I think they're using Ghost, which isn't v cache-friendly out of the box (free CF plan also has limitations with cache refresh that can be a pain for some sites, I've found it OK if configured right though)

Had a look through this and it's really good. If you have little or no coding experience but are interested in making art/simulations/whatever with code, go through the whole thing you'll end up with decent knowledge of p5.js & some maths/physics stuff https://natureofcode.com

mattround,

@simoncox Yeah I'm sure it's a whole load of factors, and maybe they were freakishly/unfairly prominent previously, it's one hell of a slope to tackle though

I coded this in the early 2000s & slightly miscalculated a v late change to the energy meter. Client was hopeless at deploying updates so it got left that way, and now young adults reminisce about how brutally difficult the cute hamster game was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UQo80_62zg

The thing I like about this game is how it shows the Flappy Bird format can work really well in 3D... as long as you make everything transparent
Within arcc there's a high score table, people got v competitive about this one

@Edent It was v satisfying when people were competing to top the high score table on Christmas Day instead of doing normal Christmas stuff
