Major watch purchase 💰 ($22 on Amazon)

I think I might switch to a mechanical watch.

@collin Do it

@collin Many affordable options here if you want to dip your toe into the idea: https://longislandwatch.com

mcphat,

@collin I wear an apple watch during workouts, that's it. No regrets.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin Such a personal preference thing! I got a seiko 40 or 42 and was convinced it was going to be too big (I had a 38 prior) and ended up loving it. Being able to try on first is ideal, but hard to come by.

I have a Hamilton Khaki Field that's 42. I could photograph it next to a seiko 38 if you want to see the side-by-side.

@collin here ya go. Tiny Seiko, Hamilton Field, Seiko Flightmaster, and Islander Diver.

@collin and this is them all lined up.

@collin Oh! And here’s an Apple Watch Series 5 44mm as well.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin Right? So hard to get a sense of watch feel from a photo. :/

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin if you can try one on somewhere definitely do. Lots of 42s that wear small, and lots that wear big.

@collin and kinda like magic. Like how does this work so well?

I’m so disappointed that Github has embraced GraphQL. There is no universe in which this (see attached) is better than GET /organization/projects/1234.json

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

(Sort of) hilariously, the gh CLI wraps some of this nonsense for you, so you can do things like gh project item-list --owner MyOrg 1234

Why not just give devs an API that's easy to use directly?

Best I can tell you can't even use Octokit.rb (the official API library) to access any of these new(ish) GQL-only API endpoints.

SMH.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

Too many devs these days didn't have to live through XMLRPC/SOAP/COM.

Let me tell you, we already did all this GraphQL bullshit before, and it was terrible.

REST is not broken. Stop trying to fix it.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@helge @Palleas You can have a shitty REST API, undoubtedly. You can have an API you say is REST but kinda only is if you squint, true.

But GraphQL solves no problems better than REST. It becomes an excuse for the dev team to not have to actually design the API, it locks you into shitty tools and clients, and it puts all the burden on the users of your API to figure out WTF is going on.

And if you have to implement and maintain the backend, God help you.

I've never used minitest/spec. How is it?

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin It's simpler. Rspec's DSL constantly trips me up. YMMV.

Probably the biggest thing I would like to see in Apple Health is some attempt to show correlations. I am tracking so much data, but I really have no good way to see how things might be connected.

I think maybe they don't do this because they don't want to put anything in there that could be considered advice.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin if you go to Mood Tracking in Health app, and then tap “Show in Charts” it has a couple tabs, “Associations” and “Life factors.” You have to use mood tracking to get this, and the factors are a bit limited, but with enough data it can be interesting. I dunno if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin those would be awesome - I hope they add more stuff like that over time!

We turned on yjit in production today and the results feel impossible.

20-40% reduction in request times, with much less variability than we were seeing before.

This is incredible.

Between last week (Ruby 3.0) and this week (Ruby 3.2+yjit), our request times have been cut in half.

I wonder if living has always been this stressful. Most of history was objectively a lot worse, so I can’t imagine it was much better.

mcphat,
@mcphat@ruby.social avatar

@collin Society today is not the context we evolved to live in. I think this makes a big impact.
