Can (and should) I provide a door code for our front door for deliveries to our house when we’re not home? I’m sick of deliveries being put smack in the middle of the front step on a perfect pedestal for porch pirates…

I can set up a specific code for each delivery company and make it only work during certain hours/days when a delivery is expected, so the security implications aren’t too bad imho. My bigger question is: will delivery companies even bother with it?

msh,
@msh@coales.co avatar

@cassidy It depends on who the shipper is in my experience

I think UPS and FedEx deliveries mostly follow delivery instructions, DHL a bit less so (coin toss) and Amazon...well if they bother even walking up to your door at all instead of just throwing your package at the house consider it a win

So this year marks the 25th anniversary of my first email server going online, and I have been running it continuously ever since (seriously I still have "Happy new year the world didn't implode" emails from 2000 in my email folders)

Nonetheless I still get this mildly dreadful feeling I have been doing it wrong this whole time. As such I have decided to go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server and make a modest pledge in exchange for Sage Advice and instruction from @mwl on running your own email server in the form of a DRM free e-book.

I have always been bemused by the irrational fear many Very Smart People have regarding self hosted email. By no means is it easy to set up but maintaining it isn't THAT hard. I have also hosted a Mastodon/Hometown instance for 7 years and I out more work into that, and that same crowd hasn't developed a phobia towards elephants. The propaganda against self hosted email is very strong!

I encourage all efforts to wrest control of email back from Google and Microsoft!

So far the biggest takeaway from this is that good housekeeping services were hard to find

    @thomasfuchs besides all that, considering the recent track records of these companies with respect to job security, I would expect anyone with any common sense that is still working there to have their CVs updated and on file with recruitment agencies by now.

    As for anyone receiving a job offer from either of them...would you really accept it with the high likelihood they would dump you like last week's trash within five years or probably less, even if they weren't supremely shitty companies in general?

    I got my son a laptop for school. (Refurb T490s!) He's not super technical but, after watching his mom struggle with windows, he wants Linux. Here's the question. Do I install Ubuntu since most Linux software works with it and it's easy to admin or do I install something else? (I run Debian and BSD on my personal machines.) Thanks! #linux #distros #question

    msh,
    @msh@coales.co avatar

    @ipxfong I no longer recommend Ubuntu for new Linux users for... multiple reasons

    Debian is pretty solid and approachable with a simple GNOME desktop and compatible with a lot of stuff...it does pretty good with games and if Debian packages don't exist for what you want is much better than Ubuntu Snaps.

    Another solid choice would be @elementary as it has a very approachable desktop environment and app support and @danirabbit has done some great work with it.
