i think that between imperative (e.g. Arch) and declarative (e.g. NixOS) managing of Linux systems, there's a third paradigm building on the second one. namely, imperative modifying declarative config

a good comparison can maybe be made to Rust's package manager, Cargo. it's configured by a Cargo.toml in a "crate" (1 buildable project of any kind in Rust, can also just be the whole repo) directory. it declaratively specifies the deps and config of a project

(since versioning in Cargo.toml isn't exact and allows upgrading at many places where it's SemVer compatible, Cargo also generates and manages a Cargo.lock by itself containing the whole dependency tree with exact versions and source it's fetched from)

however, one doesn't need to modify Cargo.toml by hand: since recently, there's also cargo {add,remove} shipped with Cargo which seem just like package manager commands, but actually modify Cargo.toml
something like that for Linux would be nice. it'd be tons of work, but it'd be cool

Are there any languages that have the C style function declaration but allow you to return multiple things ? I'm just curious to know because I'm looking for nice syntax ideas for how to represent tuples as a type

Does anyone have experience with Saarland University ? Preferably, the English programs but I'm just curious about the city and uni

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko was there for an event once, they're pretty cool
nice campus, can get to any faculty within 10min
city is pretty cheap to live in

it's one of my study candidates

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko what are the pros and cons of each?

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko Then it sounds like you'd want to go to Germany, indeed!
though, regarding TUM: are you sure you want Information Engineering and not CSE? Heilbronn isn't exactly central, most of the students are in Garching iirc
SIC is a bit weird with their English programs, they have super strict requirements for their English-only CS course. But for some reason the German one, which is English only after the 1st semester anyway, is completely restriction-free

@niko no
use whatever hardware is best for you
thinkpads are pretty well repairable and hence generally liked
but if you're comfy with something else, use that instead

Does it even matter if I do a Bachelor here or in Germany though? Im just in the dark about how and if I can continue my studies in Germany once im done with my Greek uni (8 semesters)

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko um you might want to hit up a study advisor at one of the unis you are considering, i think every German (and non-German too? idk don't know how they work) uni has one, they're usually listed as "Studienberatung" or the works

niko, to random
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

Hm, what German Unis are similar to "Digital Sytems" in Greece ? We basically do C, assembly, CPU design and all that low level stuff and I'm interested in compilers and a bit more offtopic, 3D raster engines and such. What is this low level category called so that I can search for good unis for it. Does anyone have any experience / know some good ones ?

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko Computer Science (DE: Informatik), Electrical Engineering (DE: Elektrotechnik) and Mediainformatics (DE: Medieninformatik) seem like the names of the study courses you're looking for

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@niko Generally well-known unis would be the KIT in Karlsruhe, TUM in Munich (warning: expensive) and TU Berlin

Finished replacing the CMOS battery of my Release Day PS2.

I was prepared for the repair to go bad. Too many fragile ribbon cables. And it would be okay. I had you since you were new. You've been a good boy. It's okay to not wake up anymore.

And realistically, emulating the games I still care about is also more convenient, right?

A question that is of interest today is "should a code of conduct apply outside of its borders?" In other words, can a project hold someone accountable for their behavior outside of that project's spaces?

The short answer is "yes". The long answer is "we live in a society".

🧵

multisn8,
@multisn8@peoplemaking.games avatar

@drewdevault Um maybe a typo has snuck in there? A CoC is written in natural language, after all. As the statement currently stands, it'd be neither in natural nor a programming language, but rather in a conlang or the like
