Recently got a marine science PhD. Now doing data science stuff with river flow data, and learning te reo Māori.

A sci-fi/fantasy nerd, gamer geek (board games, video games, ttrpg), and into fiction writing.

I play tam and agogo in a samba drum and dance band, and occasionally djembe at drum circles.

I enjoy hatha yoga.

Reasonably good cook (specialising in soups and stews), a novice vegetable gardener.

Also: a (probably (undiagnosed)) autistic transgender Chinese-American.

When you download and install a new app on your phone or tablet and it asks for certain permissions to use for example your location or access to contacts or photos, first ask yourself: "what could this function be of use to this app?" If you can't find a good reason just "don't allow" it

If the app does not work without that certain permission you can always change it later

Better to be safe and don't overshare data 😉

@stux If the app won't work without pointless permissions, I start looking for alternative ways to do whatever I wanted it for.

@ojala 1) lots of people watch, because bread and circuses. 2) at the end, everyone concludes that their favourite candidate(s) won.

I find them full of sound bites and not very informative, so I mostly don't bother.

    Do you eat breakfast?

And by "breakfast", I mean the first meal of the day, and actual food (coffee, tea, and juice, don't count as food but smoothies do)

Please boost for a wider demographic! 🙏

For a long time, workweek breakfast was orange juice and yogurt. Nowadays I often steam five eggs at the beginning of the week, and have one per day. Mandarins are in season in the winter here, so that has become the Vitamin C replacement lately, but it's spring now so I'll have to transition to something else.

It's coming up Election time in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Here's some things you can do to help turn out the vote.

    • if you have wee kids, take them with you when you vote. Experience shows that children will copy their parents when they are old enough.

    • if you have children over 18, make sure they are enrolled, then offer to take them to a polling booth. Evidence shows that voting once means you are more likely to vote again.

    mwt,
    @mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@christopherd even more so when the total population of the country is only 5 million. (speaking as someone from the U.S.)

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.

@malwaretech so, stop using Chrome, got it.

@amyfou there are ways to automate large chunks of that with code, particularly the reformatting of everything after it's downloaded. Your best bet would be to make friends with enthusiastic young coders (students), show them this thread, and see if any will volunteer to do it for you.
