@billbennett in related news, they don't provide roaming in the US but will charge you $8/day for it.

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett $8 per day is fine, it's the whole, I tried to do that and got no roaming service and was still charged.
Of course, later on I found out that the U.S. is opposed to certain Chinese branded phones, which mine is, and that might be why I couldn't get any service through the U.S. company proxying the service. I ended up leaving my phone on airplane mode for the whole two weeks and using wifi when possible.

@mrundkvist We just got that one! It turns out I'm very bad at figuring out how to trade to my own advantage.

shorter answer: some form of government.

how would that work? In any group of people, there has to be leadership, and if it's a big enough group that leadership is known as the government, so... ?

It's been so cool to see all the solar eclipse pictures today.

If you're in NZ the next solar eclipse for us is July 22nd 2028. Dunedin will be in the totality of the eclipse, so if you want a chance to experience seeing the total eclipse, book your accommodation now.

If you want to read up about it @iangriffin talks about it in an article in the ODT.

There will also be a good one over Nelson in 2038.

We would be better off as a species if humans turned to tea more frequently than alcohol to relax.

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@timClicks well, until you're so desperate for tea that you'll addict an entire country that you get your tea from to opium...

Web based exponentially so.

@jonoabroad is that the root cause of not being able to zoom in on text/images?

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@jonoabroad ah, so more like when the Explore tab has an interesting post, but then it updates and you can't find it anymore, because it isn't sorted in the same chronological ordering as the other tabs.

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@jonoabroad I've seen stuff like that too. It's even more fun if there's a popup in front of whatever you're trying to click on.

Here are the real results out of Iowa.

Est. Population: 3,207,004 (https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/IA/DIS010222)
Est. Adult population: 2,482,221 (same source)
Registered voters 2024-01: 1,518,210 (https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/VRStatsArchive/2024/CoJan24.pdf)
Registered Republican voters 2024-01: 594,533 (same source)
Voters participating in 2024 caucuses with 99% counted: 109,405 (https://www.cnn.com/election/2024/primaries-and-caucuses/results/iowa/republican-presidential-primary)
Votes case for Trump: 57,260 (same source)

That means that in the Iowa caucuses:
2.3% of the adults in Iowa voted for Trump.
3.8% of the registered voters in Iowa voted for Trump
9.6% of registered Republicans voters in Iowa voted for Trump

Over 90% of registered republican voters in Iowa chose not to show up and vote for Trump.

That is the real story.

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@bhawthorne
How's the Republican voter participation number compare to Republican voter participation in the five previous caucuses? I.E., is this a normal turnout or unusually low?

How do I use air conditioning efficiently? Is it better to blast it briefly throughout the day, or just leave it on?

@KiwiEV Thought you might like to read this after your new purchase.

@bananabob @KiwiEV most homes in the southeastern U.S. have central HVAC systems, and we just leave them on. I set mine to 26 in the summer and about 20 in the winter.

TRANS AND GENDER DIVERSE FRIENDS:

Since coming to terms with your gender, how often have you wished you were just a regular cis person of your gender? (E.g. trans fems wishing they were "just another cis girl")

And if you could reply, I'd love to hear why you have those feelings or thoughts. 💜

mwt,
@mwt@mastodon.nz avatar

@JoscelynTransient
I'd think the answer would depend on whether you've done any physical transitioning, whether you plan to but haven't started yet or have finished the process.

Also, hi. Good to see you around on the fediverse.

I wanna ask all the people in the Fediverse: what is the biggest misconception about being trans that kept you from realizing you're trans?

Please boost for visibility.

The biggest misconception I personally experienced was that it was impossibly expensive to transition. I put off hormones for nearly ten years because I thought I could never afford to do it. Even without insurance, it's much less expensive than I thought.

@emmalilian @Ten

It was a slow realisation for me in my 30s, that most women actually wanted to be women and liked having cycles and such. Up to that point I didn't understand why anyone in their right mind would want to be one (I think subconscious parts of me still don't).
