Someone once told me I'm too sincere to be funny.

Full-time caregiver to a disabled brother and father interested mainly in Thoreau, Zhuangzi, animism, Kings of Convenience, and drinking tea.

Master's degrees in music theory and theology (nonpracticing), classically trained and folk musician (also nonpracticing), and I once organized and helped plant over 800 trees on abandoned mine land (I do still plant trees occasionally).

If there is one thing I’ve learned (and that’s being generous) from caring for my brother it’s that the line between disabled and abled (physically, intellectually, developmentally, etc.) is much more porous, unfixed, and ephemeral than we want to admit; attempting to rigidly categorize and classify ourselves and others ‘once and for all’ is at best futile.

@Waitnwallflower I saw one a couple weeks ago for the first time, in Youngstown of all places! The guy was young looking too. My motion sickness is usually ok when I’m driving but that set it off 🤢

“To hear that you have sad hours is not sad to me. I rather rejoice at the richness of your experience… Our sadness is not sad, but our cheap joys. Let us be sad about all we see and are, for so we demand and pray for better.”

to Lidian Emerson in 1843

I just read this but it is very close to the sort of thing I, a highly sensitive person, say to my highly sensitive son all the time

cobalt, to food

New to our family, sandwich rolls: lavash, mayo, lettuce, prosciutto, havarti cheese. I am trying to find foods Drew can eat since he is not using his left hand very often. Regular sandwiches are a mess since he can’t tell the strength of his grip in his right hand. A firm hold means the sandwich filling falls out. Same for burgers now. Yay for Trader Joe’s lavash - only $2.49 for a large package. 2 pieces for 8 rolls. And it worked well.

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

@mycrowgirl @cobalt not just adults…

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

@mycrowgirl @cobalt my two cents (recognizing my situation is similar but different and everyone is different): mixing food textures in a single bite makes it harder. Sticking to similarly textured foods helps my brother. But unfortunately I can’t ever coax him to do things he doesn’t want to do. Will read this thread more closely and try to offer additional thoughts if they might be helpful…

The best thought is not only without somberness—but without morality. The universe lies outspread in floods of white light to it. The moral aspect of nature is a disease caught of man—a jaundice imported into her—To the innocent there are no cherubims nor angels. Occasionally we rise above the necessity of virtue into an unchangeable morning light—in which we have not to choose in a dilemma between right and wrong—but simply to live right on and breathe the circumambient air.

[cont.] Why should just these sights & sounds accompany our life? Why should I hear the chattering of blackbirds why smell the skunk each year? I would fain explore the mysterious relation between myself & these things. I would at least know what these things unavoidably are— —make a chart of our life know how its shores trend—that butterflies reappear & when—know why just this circle of creatures completes the world.

Can I not by expectation affect the revolutions of nature—make a day to bring forth some thing new?

@iraantlers “The impression made on a wise man is that of universal innocence. Poison is not poisonous after all, nor are any wounds fatal. Compassion is a very untenable ground.” —Walden

“A man like this could climb the high places and not be frightened, could enter the water and not get wet, could enter the fire and not get burned. His knowledge was able to climb all the way up to the Way like this.” —Zhuangzi

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

“Because nature has no fixed meanings, there would be no way to settle man’s relation to it and no way, as well, to disavow it as central. To be accompanied by nature is simply to have to see it: ‘You might say if a philosopher that he was in this world as a spectator.’ I understand the sustained documentation of the Journal as the strategy for writing about nature that resists being symbolic.”

Sharon Cameron on Thoreau’s journal from Writing Nature

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

[cont.] “For whatever gestures the Journal makes toward the idea of emblems, whatever the volumes say about generalizations or about the wish to embrace symbols and morals, what the volumes do is to dismiss the belief that any fixity—of objects or our representations of them—could withstand or accommodate the changes in nature.”
