Someone once told me I'm too sincere to be funny.

Full-time caregiver to a disabled brother and father interested mainly in Thoreau, Zhuangzi, animism, Kings of Convenience, and drinking tea.

Master's degrees in music theory and theology (nonpracticing), classically trained and folk musician (also nonpracticing), and I once organized and helped plant over 800 trees on abandoned mine land (I do still plant trees occasionally).

subaltern is a good word

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

“Ecstatic naturalism locates god within the infinite and oftimes bewildering worlds of nature natured. Insofar as the divine life is approachable phenomenologically, it is as manifest inside of and around the edges of the world(s) of orders. The primal distinction between nature naturing and nature natured is more capacious than the subaltern distinctions between being and non-being, or god and world.”

from Deep Pantheism by Robert Corrington (I should finish reading this)

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

The primal distinction within an ecstatic naturalist metaphysics is that between nature naturing (natura naturans) and nature natured (natura naturata). In what follows I will define nature naturing as “Nature perennially creating itself out of itself alone,” while nature natured will be defined as, “The innumerable orders of the World.”

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

[cont.] Note that this ontological distinction prevails within and as the one nature that there is and does not comprise two separate realities with one being more “real” or foundational than the other. Nature naturing and nature natured belong together in the fullness that is nature in its encompassing. We approach the Encompassing whenever we consciously and deliberately attain a more expanded view of nature and its innumerable orders.

1/4 Duke Ai of Lu said to Confucius, "In Wei there was an ugly man named Ai T'ai-t'o. But when men were around him, they thought only of him and couldn't break away, and when women saw him, they ran begging to their fathers and mothers, saying, ‘I'd rather be this gentleman's concubine than another man's wife!’—there were more than ten such cases and it hasn't stopped yet. No one ever heard him take the lead—he always just chimed in with other people.

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

3/4 Just as they said—he was ugly enough to astound the world. But he hadn't been with me more than a month or so when I began to realize what kind of man he was, and before the year was out, I really trusted him. There was no one in the state to act as chief minister, and I wanted to hand the government over to him.

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

2/4 He wasn't in the position of a ruler where he could save men's lives, and he had no store of provisions to fill men's bellies. On top of that, he was ugly enough to astound the whole world, chimed in but never led, and knew no more than what went on right around him. And yet men and women flocked to him. He certainly must be different from other men, I thought, and I summoned him so I could have a look.

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

4/4 He was vague about giving an answer, evasive, as though he hoped to be let off, and I was embarrassed, but in the end I turned the state over to him. Then, before I knew it, he left me and went away. I felt completely crushed, as though I'd suffered a loss and didn't have anyone left to enjoy my state with. What kind of man is he anyway?"

When I complemented the proprietor of MyTeaPal on their 2024 Mei Tan Mao Feng they said, "For the two Mao Feng teas, the picking grade is lower than the other two teas, but having more leaves makes the flavor more rich. I can see why that's the case for a puerh drinker like you." Which, I dunno, is that a bit of a slam? Heh, well, it is true, I like richer flavored green teas...

@ellestad @tea hahaha I, also being a puer drinker, find I prefer the later pickings too because they do seem to have more flavor/less subtlety

been trying to find a way to say this succinctly but I’m having trouble: it annoys me when people conflate laziness and anti-productivity. If capitalism is not just buying and selling things then similarly anti-productivity is not just laziness. There is good work and good labor that needs doing. Idealizing a certain type of laziness and calling it anti-productivity annoys me because it suggests that doing anything = being productive and therefore evil and just no
