Seeing car discourse; IMO cars are good, actually.

They enable a lot of people to have mobility who would otherwise have no access to community, medical services, an independent life.

The problem is that there’s a lot of people who’d be better off with well-working public transport: but that simply doesn’t exist in many places; especially in North America.

So they are forced to use cars, too—leading to way too many cars.

(Please refrain from replying how I’m wrong, thank you.)

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs cars are good, variously accessible mobility is good. Good public transit is good. Ped and bike enabled cities and towns are good. All of these things can be true, and all can be better than what we have.

For anyone disillusioned by their Sonos stuff, may I recommend getting a decades old stereo that has an amazing user interface that never changes and no firmware or app updates ever.

You can stream to it easily with a Bluetooth receiver, some other types of bridges like for AirPlay also exist.

Plus it sounds better.

This new iPad Pro is fantastic. Very happy with it. Except it’s also not a MacBook Air. All this power and this 3 legged OS. Stage Manager is a weak simulacrum of a window manager. Please unify these operating systems.

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly @shanselman absolutely agree. Have a bunch of caveats, that’s fine (like, reboot into macOS has no onscreen keyboard, maybe even no screen touch? At least for mvp). The statement ‘everyone with an iPad also has a MacBook’ is silly wrong way thinking :(

I am (unfortunately) on a Macintosh. A program is segfaulting, and I need to run in a debugger to find out why. I run lldb executable-name, and then "run". It prints:

error: the platform is not currently connected.

I do not know what this means. Googling for this error message turns up various things involving iOS and XCode, but I am not using either of those things, I am using lldb at the command line.

What should I do?

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@mikeloukides @mcc +1, on mac, xcode and tools own all things llvm, so you may need to do sudo xcodebuild -license accept. possibly launch xcode.

Other option is that you're running a x86 binary on ARM? you may have to do /handwave/ rosetta things?

There's people arguing that the Apple Crush! ad is "neat" and "fun".

It's literally showing the wanton destruction of things we love and make us human. Including shots that makes you identify with the things as a viewer.

I don't understand what's wrong with people. Do they not have emotions?

"The entire experience feels just like a MacBook"

Seriously what is the point then?

Why would anyone not just get the laptop that has a lot more apps for it and an operating system that doesn't suck for multitasking?

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs yet again, I’d want to be able to ‘drop into’ regular macOS on a pro. Why won’t they just merge the pro and the MacBook Air?

I would burn so many gpus and do many questionable things if it got me the ability to throw a magic wand at a fuck cluster of terraform and tighten up / debug all of the AWS iam bullshit going on in there.

Sincerely,
Has now spent two days trying to debug EKS + KMS interactions

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly I need to think/ rubber duck this more but this feels doable. I would wish for aws’ internal resolution to help, but a naive suggester may not be so bad. Id want to import all the action/principal/resource/conditions (from the docs?) but it could use get/describe to even suggest plausible updates.

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

@thomasfuchs the tech problems of these things “could” be innovated away, but the tech is (as always) years away (not holding my breath - the display tech alone is going to require some revolutionary change). The he human problems (eye strain, nausea) probably require some similar level discovery into how to solve dynamically for organic system differences. Looking like an idiot? That just doesn’t go away 🤣

Joe Biden just banned Tik Tok.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/biden-signs-israel-ukraine-tiktok-bill-into-law.html

If America can do this to Tik Tok, America can and will do it to whatever internet thing it is you like just as easily. Don't imagine China itself was the point of this. (The ban[s] cover ByteDance plus any company 20%+ owned within a country on this short list https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/4872#:~:text=metals%20and%20alloys.-,(2)Covered%20nation,-.%E2%80%94The%20term but given how easily this passed it seems a precedent is set for Congress to add whatever other company, organization or country it feels like to the list.)

@mcc "controlled by" is probably doing the heavy lifting here. eg: Tencent is a minority owner of Epic (40%, though not immediately sure of voting share percent). OTOH, I believe tencent does have a majority control of Riot.

There's like an entire class of open source project where you can no longer get support for them because they're old enough that the support channels are IRC rather than Discord or something but nobody's on IRC anymore (or rather hundreds of people are on the libera.chat channel, but no one is talking or reading questions)

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc pretty sure that for the myisam type these are MYD=raw data rows, MYI=non clustered indexes, FRM=table description and stats. So I think without the myd, no data. Without the frm, no description of how the myd is formed. Deleting the frm is equivalent to DROP TABLE (it’s what happens last). MySQL should fix it up at next boot that that table is gone.

Looking into how to set up a bluesky server.

Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc IIRC npm link creates a symlink in your global node_modules dir (somewhere in /usr/local) to the pkg you are linking. that means then you can reference it elsewhere without it installing in to that folders node_modules. So, it kinda sidesteps workspaces.

for linking packages together, I've been using the file:$path method when they always live 'together' but not in the same workspace. But, if you're doing a test you may want to link so that you can use the version spec.

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc aside from a find for symlinks in that directory? (i think npm path -g?) I don't know of one. I've gone as far as nuking the whole thing to correct bad links before :(

Pretty much all of the woes of distributed tracing are caused from the mismatch of the mental model of distributed tracing that makes sense vs the one that can be built easily:

The model that makes sense is "lazily built and incrementally fleshed out call graph with late-binding updates of attributes as discovered"

But the way that makes sense to implement it is "strict call-stack semantics with fire-and-forget frozen rows of data into an append only data store"

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

for 1, getting an efficient unit-of-work to put a span around is the hard part. at scale, making every streaming message/row its own span/trace is a lot of overhead. for 1 and 3, one of the problems is there are two 'parent' traces I want to track, one for the local loop, one for the distributed. for 2, it seems like otel (or ddog's flavor) mostly works here, though it can get tricky to navigate or query the stacks.

I really like the Oura ring as a sleep tracker, and I've been trying wearing it daytime lately just to satisfy some curiosity, but it has one downside:

You'll damage it if you try to do a pull-up without removing it first.

Maybe I'll get a Fitbit or something in the future. I used to have an Apple watch, but honestly the smaller width would annoy me much less

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive I don’t think I could recommend the fitbits any more. I love that form factor of the smaller Alta but Google has absolutely decimated that team and it struggled with even basic stuff after a few updates.

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive yeah, totally agree. So many opportunities (we will see if maybe something comes from the apple suit to make a bit more competition?)

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive I've got the smaller face one on now, and it doesn't bug me, but I 100% get that its not for everyone. The larger face/ultra would drive me bonkers I think. I really resisted it for a long time until it became obvious there is so little in between.

What is that even called? KM switch?

onyxraven,

@thomasfuchs by this I assume you mean a USB switch, but with maybe keyboard awareness to have a hotkey/combo to trigger the switch? (USB switches, even usb 3.2, are plentiful and cheap)
