@ultimike Hey, I didn't know you won the Aaron Winborn award! That's massive! And VERY well deserved! Thanks for being my agent since 2014 with the Module Upgrader!

: We're building a distribution but not calling it a distribution, including initiatives that we were doing anyway, to make it easier for users to do things quickly, but we don't know exactly what those things will be or how they will be implemented, but it can all be done in 8 months, because we are going to solve our governance problems by bypassing our usual governance process.

@mikemccaffrey I have my issues with the messaging, but I believe in the mission, and I've worked really hard on this. So please, be kind. Happy to answer whatever questions I can.

@mikemccaffrey Yeah, I agree there. It’s critical that this stuff be sorted out. It’s being discussed in the GitHub and on Slack if you have any ideas; all input would be welcome.

Since 11.0.0-alpha1 is out, I've also tagged 5.0.0-alpha1 of the CDN module — compatible with Drupal >10.3 and 11 🚢 https://www.drupal.org/project/cdn/releases/5.0.0-alpha1

Fittingly tagged at Brussels airport while traveling to 🛫

Fun fact: there already was a 5.x-1.x branch that precedes this 5.x branch by more than a decade! https://git.drupalcode.org/project/cdn/-/commits/5.x-1.x/ vs https://git.drupalcode.org/project/cdn/-/commits/5.x 👴

I recently created my first @ViewsField plugin, which apparently is unique among plugins in that you also need to implement a hook (hook_views_data_alter) to tell Views about it and how to use it. The properties you define in the hook seem very similar to what other plugins take as annotation.

Is there something especially complex about this plugin type that regular annotation isn't enough, thus the hook? Or is this just a case of a plugin type that COULD be simplified but hasn't yet?

phenaproxima,
@phenaproxima@drupal.community avatar

@DaleTrexel The Views API is a mess. I don't know anyone who doesn't think so. I think a lot of the reason why is that it's absolutely littered with complicated legacy code that can't be ripped out or deeply refactored, because someone somewhere is depending on it. Views is so sprawling and complex that cleaning it up would take years, factoring in the need for the core developers to respect backwards compatibility. I could go on, but you get the idea...

As I've learned to DIY certain things in my house, it's amazing just how shockingly low-tech it all is.

For example, to partially seal an unfinished space from the outside, we shoved cut-up pool noodles into some gaps, then covered those by taping a plastic sheet to the wall and ceiling. And that's apparently a perfectly legitimate way to do air sealing.

This makes me feel a lot better about using kludges.

    The worst part about deciding to move in 2024 is having to wait until 2024 to move. I need the time, though, to deliberately decide where I want to go and to practice appreciating what I have right now.

    MATT, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

    At @midcamp, I gave a lightning talk about the greatest and worst idea I have had for four years.

    An interoperability layer for to keep running legacy code.

    mglaman/drupal-bridge is coming soon!

    what if you could migrate from D7 -> D10 without rewriting all of your code? what if we only needed to migrate data and refactor legacy code over time? how many Drupal 7 sites could this unblock?

    Picture of Drupal 7 taxnomy_menu module installed on Drupal 10
    Screenshot of Drupal 7 module's database table being created (okay, this kind of just worked without trickery)

    @mglaman @midcamp Nice. I'd had this same idea kicking around, but I never bothered to try it.

    A debate I’m having with my partner right now: should charts (e.g., embedded charts from things like Google Charts) be considered as media and therefore be created as a media type?

    Me personally, I feel like it really depends on the use case(s). Plus, if doing it as a media type one would have to probably create a custom MediaSource plugin to support it — even if the chart in question is an embed code sort of thing.

    I’m just curious how others would consider things like charts!

    phenaproxima,
    @phenaproxima@drupal.community avatar

    @cainaru Depending on what Google Charts supports, you might be able to use core's oEmbed source plugin with only a touch of custom code.
