Do you think dreams mostly make narrative sense as you have them, or do people impose a story on a dream as they try to recount the series of random thoughts images and memories?

It'd obviously vary from person to person, but I think something transformative and irreversible happens when you tell what happened in a dream to another person. You need a clothesline to hang it all on and the line forever reshapes the images from the dream into a story.

@futurebird Part both. I'm not sure about the irreversible change - but I tend to examine my own dreams, so maybe that's the same.

Watched a video of Gigantiops destructor (the ant with the best eyesight of ants) A lone ant hunting makes a point of sneaking up on the prey from behind, circling them to stay clear of their antennae and out of range of their eyes.

Can that be done without a "theory of the mind of the other" ?

"It can see me here, it can't see me there?"

Were this a mammal I bet people would call this evidence sufficient. Since ants are so tiny, & have such tiny brains we look for other explanations.

To me, language seems like an abstract construct - like mathematics. Evolution doesn't need it - and I do not think that there is a speaker behind the language of DNA. History is not a story, but we like to suppose that it is because we are predisposed to that abstraction. We also like to invent consciousness - "damn computer refusing to work". None of this seems wrong, but there is thought beyond words IMO.

In math I see spaces, objects, figures, connections - and equations or language can only catch them by the tail. Programs seem like stories for one or several imagined actors exploring a space that is either timeless (functional) or timeful (imperative).

Consciousness could be seen as a self-referential story generator - but its language seems to depend on the outside.

English as an imprecisely copied fractal?

    Wenn Menschen Texte veröffentlichen, die andere für sie geschrieben haben (weil die bei ihnen dafür angestellt sind): Ist es richtig, dass sie dann auch das Geld von der VG Wort dafür kriegen?

    Und ich meine hier nicht 'juristisch korrekt', sondern: Wie finden wir das?

    Ich weiß dass das eine Detaildiskussion ist, aber die Frage stellt sich IMO schon.

    @funkylab @anneroth Und wo bleibt dieses Recht auf einem Arbeitsmarkt auf dem man diese Rechte quasi grundsätzlich abgeben muss? Als Programmierer würde man mich auslachen wenn ich als Urheber dargestellt wollen würde - das ist einfach nicht Teil unserer Kultur.

    @max @funkylab IMO werden wir in der kommerziellen Entwicklung fast alle wie Ghostwriter behandelt - das fällt nur nicht auf weil es die Norm ist.

    @anneroth Ganz schön angepasst diese Grünen - und gegenüber Leuten wie mir haben sie oft Berührungsängste weil wir ihnen nicht konventionell genug sind. Das war mal anders.

    I hear from many people that doesn't work for them anymore as it stopped showing notifying them of new messages. Same here.
    And the only response seems to be "read the blogpost and figure it out for yourself". This is so detrimental to the idea of getting our friends and families off WhatsApp & Co.

    I absolutely believe, based on knowledge of the subject matter, that real, sentient, artificial intelligence is not only possible, but will eventually be created.

    I also do not believe for a second that current technology is anywhere close to the level needed to do the job, and even if it were, our understanding of cognition is far too low to actually pull it off except by accident.

    @0x5021 Meistens ohne Streaming. Auch Video lieber ohne. Streaming ist mir zu wechselhaft, und meine Community kriegt es nicht auf den Rand ihre Peer-Sharing-Systeme am Start zu halten.

    The F-16A cockpit, designed in the early 1970s (in the era of slide rules), is still the epitome of an effective, efficient, ergonomic design. Its superiority is evident, when compared to the cockpits of its contemporaries, especially that of the F-15A. Another admirable UI design, albeit on a much smaller scale, is the Control Display Unit (CDU) of a typical Flight Management System (FMS). It, too, was designed in the 1970s. Such "industrial" UIs were designed, through iterative usability testing, by a team of psychologists, industrial engineers, electronic engineers, mechanical engineers, and experienced pilots.

    In-cockpit, real-time UIs like these aims to decrease the potential for human error and to increase the pilots' situational awareness. They use the smallest possible set of usage conventions, control types, display components, fonts, and colours. They allow pilots to focus their attention completely on the critical information needed for the task at hand.

    The traditional philosophy of human-machine interaction design is "usability without visibility". But today, the 's primary role is not , but . And the users falsely equate flashy UIs with superior service.

    This expensive trend is profitable to marketeers and attractive to casual users. So, it is justifiable for social media platforms and other non-mission-critical software. But this trend is unsuited to enterprise software, especially those designed for internal use. Such flashy antics diminish business users' and increases the company's of ownership.

    @AmenZwa Some people think that nerds use funky UI to feel good about themselves, but it's mostly about the annoyance of slow workflows on standard systems - that have been designed for entry-level users, 10 years back.

    @AmenZwa I don't know - it depends. I use tabbed window manager on laptops. Command-lines could be better... I've used graphical ones from the 1980s, so UNIX doesn't hold much appeal. It's fast though - totally superior over slow network connections. 😄

    A new study has found a terrible bottleneck in human ancestors about 900k years ago. There were as few as 1000 individuals left ... if this is verified further there was a time when we almost didn't make it.
