    @neil You know someone that can do electronic locks, you know that 🙂

    [Yes, they also work with proper keys as a fallback - I am not that stupid]

    Bought a new cheap "USB-C" bike light and as expected they fucked up the CC pins so it won't charge or supply power as advertised. There's space for a resistor here if I can cut the trace, so lets see if I can unfuck it.

    @revk any chance of a few more pics/words on how you have setup your Alternative Unofficial Daikin WiFi controller? A quick 5 line guide for others to follow would be greatly appreciated!

    @eddieblahblah I have tried to make the README on here quite good. https://github.com/revk/ESP32-Faikin

    • initial appears as WiFi access point with web form to allow connection to local WiFi.
    • Local web interface allows direct control over WiFi.
    • Connects to MQTT for remote and Home Assistant integration.
    • Talks serial to S21 or X50 port on Daikin
    • Can now work with remove BlueCoinT temp sensor as reference.

    If people are recommending that you rotate your credentials somewhere, it's legitimate to ask what's changed between when your creds were nominally compromised and now that would avoid them just immediately being compromised again

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @mjg59 Well yes. I can think of a third option though. What if the vulnerability is in the “update password” process, and so getting everyone to do so gets way more accounts compromised. Obviously not saying that is the case here, but it is a third option…

    Service-as-a-Software-Substitute (SaaSS) is a judgemental term coined by the FSF to indicate there is no technological reason for some software to be an internet service. Only presumably financial ones.

    Notably not all Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) qualifies as SaaSS, and many cases we may need to make SaaSS judgements feature-by-feature rather than product-by-product.

    This is an important concept since proprietary software has now shapeshifted into SaaSS. Any favourite examples?

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @alcinnz Do you mean, for example the sort of things like local devices locally configured such as WiFi APs or aircon units but they are done with a mobile app front end on some internet cloud back end service that then talks to the local unit. It forces a totally unnecessary dependency on the service and connection and company for something that should be 100% local and on network.

    Testing these AP11 - they seem to "just work". Need to test in the real world next.

    Hmm, I can't see how to set up an open access with no password...

    Ah, has to be a "guest" network. Weird

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @henry It is an app, driving cloud, driving local config (which then works without cloud I think). From a user point of view seems quite slick, but obvious implications being cloud. Some have suggested the hardware may be reflashable with instant (local admin), but not tried that myself. I can see some people will like it the way it works.

    Oh wow...

    I was thinking it is really odd, somewhat suddenly, last few days, I have had trouble with one eye with my reading/computer glasses.

    I figured it happens and I need a new eye test.

    Then today, one lens actually falls out.

    Seems the (round) lens had got loose, and had turned while cleaning. Turning it around bit I can see properly, and screw it back in place.

    A good reason not to buy glasses that have round lenses!

    Crazy!

    I need to make a (work) decision some point soon and, for once, I am on the fence.

    The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has offered me an occasional seat on its Technology Advisory Panel.

    I guess I should be chuffed, but the overall selection and onboarding experience has left so much to be desired, that I am in two minds whether it is worth me accepting.

    But it might lead to some interesting experiences, and I guess I could always turn down stuff if it was problematic for me…

    Tricky.

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @neil well they need some people with a clue, and you qualify there, but I can’t really help you decide.

    I believe I've successfully

    1. Implemented the @counter CSS at-rule,
    2. Wrote the logic to textually output numbers according to those properties,
    3. & gathered a large sample useragent stylesheet defining a large range of counting-systems/bullet-styles. Across numerous languages, & including all the standard ones.

    My internationalization could be better (some number systems can't be defined using @counter yet), but I am terribly impressed I got this far!

    My wife is making waistcoats for the male grandkids right now - some nice blue fabric with crowns on it. There will be some dresses for the girls I believe.

    I feel I am not making enough effort myself now.

    My main plan to contribute is buying lots of wine for the local street party.

    It is fun working with @neil

    He is an expert on law.

    I have years of experience of "logic" from a largely "telling a computer exactly what to do" viewpoint.

    I try to apply logic to law, and Neil corrects me 🙂

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @neil One of the fun things is that the "feeling" for such things is not that general.

    There is telecoms software and protocols, and they have a way or working.

    There is internet software and protocols, and they have a way or working.

    There is embedded and microcontroller code, and that has a way or working.

    There is linux/unix coding, database coding, banking and finance coding.

    And they can all be very different feel and style and possible bugs.

    It is quite fun.

    I bet law is the same.

    revk,
    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    @AlisonW @neil One of the things in my autobiography was experience of "stupidity in coding" working with people in university. That was a big insight.
