firefox will now track your searches by default and you'd have no way of knowing they're doing that unless you look for this random blog post on their website: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/products/firefox/firefox-search-update/

it does look like you can turn it off at least.

Isn’t it kind of weird that there are people on Fedi whose entire shtick is being against the TOS?

Like, I’m sure we’ve all been reported here and there, but it’s kind of weird to just… be excited to be here? It feels we’ve gotta follow the rules to me IDK. And not like even being on Bluesky, building a kind and safe community here.

Is especially obvious because you can see that each “post” isn’t the the vibe we want and it just is jarring.

Just now realising the correlation between how many Fedi users adopt the name Luna, and how insanely popular Luna is as a dog name... :senkohmm:

This is a thread, it was originally on twitter posted on tumblr and i found it in my export. I think that this is a very important thing for people to hear, especially in regards to alt text on fedi. Please be mindful of the people around you, and try to make things accessible. I think that the people around me can relate to this, I have had a lot of times my short term memory would just blank out and I would have to ask over and over again for someone to repeat themselves.

I won't break my vow to always CW depressing stuff, as shown by the content warning. I am incredibly disappointed in how the NHS (even to an outsiders perspective) has gone from something to be proud of, to a disgrace and a privatized healthcare system. The NHS was one of the things I thought Britain did right, and watching it deteriorate over the years... all the pain and suffering I've heard from UK friends regarding wait times to HRT spanning years...

in 2009, on totally homebrew software, The Pirate Bay served 20 million simultaneous peers on 10 servers (20 for the website) for $3,000 a month.

i wonder how much serving 20 million simultaneous users costs netflix. there are ~260 million total subscribers of netflix (of which a fraction are active at a time) and its total operating expenses (which is obviously A Lot More Different Things Than TPB) are ~$7 Billion a year.

the comparison isn't all that ridiculous. netflix is about 10% of all bandwidth, and bittorrent used to be >30% of all bandwidth - of which TPB tracked roughly half.

Idk why people are surprised by telegram using nazi dogwhistles, they’re rotten to the core even without that fact.

durov is a rightoid who made his platform to have tho worst model of moderation - no moderation at all, unless some government tells him to delete stuff under the threats of blocking the whole messenger.

russian war criminals have their own personal channels on tg, where they brag about executing civilians in Ukraine now, and in Chechnya and Syria in the past. They post photo and video evidence, share it between each other, have chats connected to the groups where hundreds of thousands of people cheer and support them, discussing how to genocide people more creatively.

russian government officials who have channels as well are sharing posts from those nazi channels, cheer and call for more bloodshed, more genocide, more death. Millions of people read this every day.

None of this is moderated, and tg refuse to do so, because freedom if speech must include freedom to call for genocide and spreading evidences of committing it, apparently.

So yeah, it’s not only dogwhistles, it’s much worse. And don’t get me started on infosec concerns about the telegram.

the best way to prevent bad actors from compromising your system is to prevent the avenues they would compromise your systems from. signature-based antivirus can only get you so far, you need to address the root problems that cause these issues - things like bad software distribution methods (like going to a website and downloading an executable file directly) and unaudited background updates. these systems need to be replaces with systems that are less prone to abuse. for example, measures like welfare can strongly reduce poverty, disincentivizing people from committing crime in order to live. additionally, decriminalizing crimes without victims is crucial to stopping the cycle of abuse. really, these issues are inherent to a capitalist society, and the only way forward is the destruction of the state as we know it

Hi Fedi, I did something!

Here is the Neomojimixer (BETA)! https://entenbru.st/neomojimixer/

A little website where you can mix different parts of the well known NEOMOJIS to create new ones without using GIMP or anything.

A big shout-out and a bigger thanks to
@volpeon for letting me use :neofox: & :neocat:
@onemuri for letting me use :neorat:
@EeveeEuphoria for letting me use :neopossum:

You are awesome! :neofox_heart::neocat_heart::neorat_heart::neopossum_heart:

(I've contacted the author of :blobbee: and :neobread: but haven't heard back yet, so they're currently unavailable)

At the moment there are

  • 31 bodies to choose from
  • 32 different eyes to add
  • 24 mouths for different expressions
    and
  • 35 arms (each in six different colours)

For a total of 276 elements to mix and match and over 800,000 possible combinations.

Please note that this is a BETA release, so there are some bugs to be expected. For example, the arms of :neorat_frozen: have the wrong colour outlines.

The HTML and CSS is "optimised" for the screen I developed the script on, and is one of my higher priorities for change. If you know your way around HTML and CSS, I would welcome a helping hand!

You can find the repository here: https://codeberg.org/fotoente/neomojimixer

Feel free to contribute in any way. Improve the JavaScript, add new parts, edit new bodies for even more variation... Anything is welcome.

Even just opening an issue to tell me about bugs or unexpected behaviour is welcome.

I can only spend a very limited number of hours on this project, so the speed of improvements can be higher with your help! :neofox_heart::neocat_heart::neorat_heart::neopossum_heart:

So have fun with this little silly project!
And here are four examples of mixed-up NEOMOJIS.

lost media is an important topic to me and why I dislike the current copyright system because thousands of things like shareware have been lost to history due to risk assessment and people not wanting to get sued for copyright infringement despite the fact the company owning the copyright doesn’t exist anymore
