Student protest movements have historically functioned as an indispensable corrective for America and the West. That is the legacy of 1968 we should be talking about.
@tzimmer_history Thank you Thomas.
I’m a #GenXers & daughter of working class “#babyboomer Hippies”.
We’re all born & raised in Ann Arbor, MI…my parents were HUGELY involved in the ‘68 #protests & went on to start our cities Ecology Center.
But current protests really get under their skin.
Mom & I argue over it.
I’ve been unable to voice effectively my concerns.
Your piece lays it all out there.
Hopefully after she reads this piece, we can reach a clearer understanding of this issue.
Thousands of demonstrators, including climate activist @gretathunberg have gathered in the Swedish city of Malmö to protest against Israel's participation in Eurovision. Thunberg told the BBC there was a "moral obligation to act" and speak out against Israel's military operation in Gaza. "It's not true that the Eurovision is not political, it has always been political, and it will always be," said another protestor, Matilda Varatta, who told Reuters that she would like to see Israel disqualified as Russia was in 2022. Tonight sees the song contest's second semi-final, in which Israel's Eden Golan is performing. The final will take place on Saturday May 11.
A Hong Kong court has banned a protest song popular during pro-democracy demonstrations this Wednesday with authorities then demanding that online platforms remove it. Catherine Khédir-Clifford has more. #HongKong#China#protests
As I've written in the past, I used to dismiss conspiracy theories out of hand, but I've become more open to them in the last ten years. One of theories that I think has some truth in it is the idea that #protests are often not really spontaneous: in many cases there are hidden parties initiating or encouraging them.
Seen the rubble, the buildings,
the mothers and the children
And all the men that you murdered,
and then we see how you spin it... https://yewtu.be/watch?v=fgDQyFeBBIo
A debate about the differences of #antiZionism & #antiSemitism isn't possible @freieuniversitaet . Some might say that's corrupted by design, but I'd call it a classic conflict of interest.
However, #FUBerlin president prof. Ziegler published today: “This kind of protest is not dialogue oriented. An occupation of university property is not acceptable. We welcome academic debate and dialogue – but not in this form,”
The subtitle reads ‘UCLA watched the chaos unfold in the middle of the night and did nothing until it was far too late’. There was no mistake, that is what they intended to happen, aided and abetted by the ‘police’
Amid the police crackdown on Gaza protests coast-to-coast—drawing concern from the UN human rights office—hostage advocacy organizations, rights groups and co-existence activists have been protesting in Israel, and similarly meeting with repression. They are, at a minimum, demanding a deal...
Friendly looking people on their way to teargas some teenagers at #UVa, Governor Youngkin's request, based on a policy change barring tents made overnight and without notice. #protests
People in the U.S. complain about disruptive #protests, but the country has systematically closed down venues for #dissent. Want to vote for a non-genocidal President? Sorry, two-party system. Want to pass progressive legislation? Sorry, filibuster. Want to support the #Palestinians? Sorry, our ally is #Israel. Want your #university to divest from armaments? Sorry, fiduciary duty. Want to write some graffiti? Sorry, #vandalism. So disruption may be all we have left, short of #violence.
It’s good to check several sources to get the full picture of what is going on with the pro-Palestinian #protests on university campuses across North America and the world.
